Beginning in 1952, EMD started a "trade-in" program where railroads could send old EMD's back to LaGrange as credit towards new purchases. In the early days, a specific unit-for-unit accounting was kept, with some parts such as trucks being reused in some cases. Later, it became just a "scrap value" transaction, with just about any locomotive eligible.
