General Notes:
| a. | UP 301, 305, and 308B were rebuilt by EMD as pre-production GP20s, using EMD's new turbocharger. The units also received the 2350 gallon fuel tank, horizontal air reservoirs and inspection slots in the frame side usually associated with the GP20. |
| b. | UP 321 was the first GP9 to be equipped at the factory with 48-inch roof-top radiator fans. Earlier units in this order were retro-fitted by UP with the new 48-inch radiator fan, replacing their original 36-inch fans. |
| c. | UP 324 was equipped with a separate oil cooler, located in the short hood, requiring small louvers in the short hood car body. |
| d. | Many of the 300-class cab units were modified with a separate access door above the walkway and behind the fireman's side of the cab. This added door allowed access for easier changing of the units' field shunt resistors. By photo research, the modified units include UP 312, 316, and 317. |
| e. | UP 329 was the last 2000 horsepower GP9M (nicknamed Omaha GP20) on UP, retired in May 1985. |
| f. | UP 340 was equipped with a large pilot snowplow. |
| g. | Many units in the 300-class GP9s were equipped to burn low grade, known as Bunker C, fuel. This modification included large fuel lines mounted to the left side of the new 2400 gallon fuel tank. By photo research, using the addition of open-grid walkways as the indicator, the modified units include UP 307, 311, 316, 328, 336, 343, 348, and 349. |
| h. | UP 300-349 had an original operating weight of 246,800 pounds before the addition of the 2400 gallon fuel tanks. UP 312, 333, 338, 341, 345, and 346 retained this weight throughout their operating careers. The units equipped with 2400 gallon fuel tanks had operating weights of 258,700 pounds. |
| i. | Built on EMD order number 5552, frame numbers 5552-1 to 50. |

General Notes:
| a. | Fifteen UP 300 class GP9Bs were equipped with steam generators, used system wide on secondary passenger trains when needed. Included were UP 306B, 310B, 311B, 318B, 324B, 325B, 326B, 329B, 338B, 339B, 341B, 343B, 346B, 347B, and 349B. Each locomotive was equipped with a combination 1300 gallon fuel and 1100 gallon water tank. After Amtrak took over the passenger trains on Union Pacific in 1971, the steam generators were retired in place on the locomotives. The combination fuel and water tanks were converted to 2400 gallon fuel tanks. |
| b. | Many units in the 300-class GP9s were equipped to burn heavy fuel, also known as Bunker C. This modification included large fuel lines mounted to the left side of the new 2400 gallon fuel tank. |
| c. | Built on EMD order number 5552, frame numbers 5552-B1 to 5552-B50. (changed from showing frame numbers as 5552-B51 to 5552-B100, per email from Larry Russell, dated June 1, 2005, based on conjecture for matching frame numbers on earlier GP9B units, UP 130B-204B, which had been frame-checked on numerous occasions.) |

General Notes:
| a. | Original total of eight units, numbered WP 725-732; six units to UP at merger; WP 726 and 730 were retired by WP in 1964 and 1971, long before the UP merger in 1982, but were assigned number slots in the UP 300-306, 308 number series. |
| b. | UP numbers 300-306, 308 were assigned based on assumption of all eight units were still in service at time of UP merger; UP GP9 307 was still in service at time of merger. |
| c. | WP GP9 725 was the last former WP unit, lettered for WP, to operate on WP; removed from service on 8 January 1985 and sent to North Platte, Neb., for repaint. |
| d. | WP 729 repainted to UP 304, with smaller lettering, "Union Pacific" all on one line. |
| e. | WP 732 repainted to UP 308, with larger lettering, "Union Pacific" on two lines. |
| f. | UP 300, 304, 306, and 308 operated until May 1985 (UP 308 was the last unit of this group to be removed from service, on 24 May 1985), at which time they were shipped east to Omaha to be sold, in operating condition. All four units were purchased by Precision National Corp. in July 1985, but remained in storage at Council Bluffs until mid March 1986. |

General Notes:
| a. | Original total of SP 20 units, numbered SP 7754-7769 and SSW 7770-7773; 16 units went to UP at merger; SP retired four units (SP 7765, SSW 7771-7773) prior to the merger. (SSW 7771-7773 were still on the property at merger; SSW 7771 and 7773 were sold by UP to Livingston Rebuild Center, Livingston, Mont., in March 1997; SSW 7772 was sold by UP to Progress Rail Services in March 1997.) |
| b. | Seven remaining units assigned UP 7733-7739 in December 1999; all units retired by 2000, prior to being renumbered. |
Notes:
| 1. | Seven units (SP 7755, 7760, 7761, 7762, 7767, 7768, and 7769) were sold to Boise Locomotive Co., Boise, Idaho, on 15 April 1999 (SP 7762 on 16 April 1999); moved to MPI in Mexico for potential rebuilding and sale in November 1999. (SSW 7772, previously retired by SP and sold by UP to Progress Rail, was also involved in the move.) |
| 2. | UP 396 (ex SP 7766) was the only unit of the former SP/SSW 7754-7773 group to be repainted to the Union Pacific 384-399 group, completed on 4 May 1998. |
