General Notes:
| a. | Original total of 22 units, numbered WP 3001-3022; 17 units to UP at merger; WP 3007, 3011, 3016, 3018, and 3021 (five units) were retired by WP prior to the UP merger. |
| b. | Assigned UP numbers 782-799, including UP number 796 for retired WP 3018, wrecked on 12 September 1981 (with U23B 2259) at Deeth, Nev. |
| c. | During March 1984 all 17 remaining former WP GP35s were gathered from around the UP system and reassigned back to former WP tracks in California. At that time only four had been repainted to yellow, the rest were painted at North Platte prior to being moved to California. The GP35s were needed because of the high failure rates of the UP GP30s that had been assigned there to replace the former WP GP9s. |
| d. | Original WP operating lease expired on 1 January 1993; UP retained seven units (UP 782, 785, 786 788, 791, 793, 798) on a one year operating lease, until 30 December 1993, when they were also returned to the owner/lessor; two others (UP 789 and 797) were retained by UP from 1 January 1993 through 5 April 1993, and returned to the owner/lessor. Throughout 1993, these units were retained on a motive power shortage for local and branchline power that was made worse in August due to service disruptions caused by flooding along the Missouri River. The units were assigned to local service in the Little Rock, Ark. area. |
| e. | UP 793, as WP 3014, was wrecked on 27 July 1982 near Reno, Nev.; rebuilt by UP at Salt Lake Shops, using long hood from UP GP35 744; completed as UP 793 in late June 1985. |
| f. | UP 798, as WP 3020, was wrecked on 27 July 1982 near Reno, Nev.; rebuilt by UP at Salt Lake Shops, using the long hood from UP GP35 763 in February 1984 and the cab from wrecked MP GP38-2 2031 in March 1986; UP 798 was completed in late January 1987. |
| g. | UP 782-790 were built on EMD order number 7662. |
| h. | UP 791 was built on EMD order number 7770. |
| i. | UP 792-799 were built on EMD order number 7790. |

General Notes:
| a. | UP 850-887 were on long term lease from Helm Financial beginning in January 1989. All units had other owners prior to their lease to UP by Helm. Units received by UP between January and April 1989 entered service with their previous numbers, or with UP 850-series numbers and varying combinations of previous owners' paint. In April and May, these units were returned to Helm for reconditioning, and returned to UP service over the following months, through November in full yellow paint and 800-series numbers. Helm also leased four other GP40s (3000, 3013, 3020, and 3072) to UP during the period January through May 1989, but these units did not return as UP 800-series units. |
| b. | Prior to entering UP service, all units were fully reconditioned by various contract rebuilding shops for Helm. Most were done by VMV Enterprises at Paducah, Ky. UP 875-881 are former MILW units, which had been previously leased by Helm to CN. These units were returned from Canada and reconditioned for Helm Financial, and repainted to UP 800s, by the Livingston Rebuild Center in Livingston, Mont. |
| c. | UP 887 was renumbered from UP 598, which was exchanged to Helm in March 1990 to replace the wrecked UP 863. UP 887 was built as MKT 229, leased by MKT under a long-term operating lease that was to expire in June 1995. MKT 229 was renumbered to UP 598 on 5 May 1989. UP 598 suffered an engine failure in early September 1989 and was placed into storage awaiting repairs. After the wreck of UP 863, UP 598 was purchased from its owner/lessor, retired, and turned over to Helm to replace the 863, all in March 1990. The diesel engine from the wrecked UP 863 was used by Helm to replace the damaged engine in the 598. Also, the dynamic brake components of the wrecked 863 were applied to the new 887, which was built for MKT without dynamic braking. The rebuilding of UP 598 to UP 887 was done by VMV Enterprises of Paducah, Ky., and completed and shipped to UP on 20 February 1991. (Frame number 7192-19) |
