Notes:

1. UP 8501 was built as UP 8201 in October 1996 and delivered for functional testing to AAR's test track near Pueblo, Colo.; moved to VMV for upgrade during July 1998; released from VMV on 10 October 1998; renumbered to UP 8911.
2. UP 8504 operated from March 1997 through January 1998 as EMDX 8204, then as EMDX 8504 until September 1998, painted in a special paint scheme to commemorate EMD's 75th anniversary; moved to VMV for upgrade during May 1998; released from VMV in full UP yellow and gray on 26 September 1998; renumbered to UP 8914.

General Notes:

a. UP 9000 first operated as a test unit at the EMD plant in October 1977; operated as EMD demonstrator (GMCX 9000) on D&RGW in February and March 1978, en route to Leadville, Colo., on BN for high altitude testing; UP 9000 was delivered to UP on 16 July 1978, after the other five units. UP records showed a build date for UP 9000 as 15 July 1978.
b. UP 9002 had an initial air-equipment date of February 28, 1978.
c. Equipped with special high adhension HT-B trucks.
d. Initial per unit cost for UP 9000-9005, according to Equipment Trust No. 1 of 1978, dated September 1, 1977, was $502,400, with a total cost of $3,014,400 for all six units. As comparison, the 29 SD40-2s purchased under the same trust, UP 3410-3438, cost $609,425 each.
e. All six units had a bolster centerline of 34 feet, 10-3/4 inches; the trucks had a wheelbase of 117-1/2 inches; the noses were EMD's 88 inches long version.
f. All six units were rebuilt by UP using some GP50 components in October and November 1981; the original 42-inch wheels were replaced with standard 40-inch wheels by late 1984.
g. Built as UP 9000-9005, renumbered to UP 90-95 in May and June 1985; renumbered to UP 954-959 in January 1989 through January 1990, UP 956 retired in November 1997; assigned UP 5500-5505 in 1997, two units renumbered in June and November 1997; assigned UP 9994-9998 in December 1999, none renumbered prior to retirement of five remaining units in May and June 2001.

Total of 60 units; built as MP 9000-9059, the second group of new units delivered after the December 1982 merger with UP; delivered with yellow and gray paint and Missouri Pacific lettering (MP's SD50s were the first group, delivered in 1984); relettered to Union Pacific lettering in June 1988 through March 1989 (UP 9040 was the first, completed on 8 June 1988, and UP 9023 was the last, completed on 17 March 1989.
b. All 60 units upgraded by UP at North Little Rock, beginning in January 1988; upgrade program included rebuilt trucks, rebuilt engines (done by GE at Grove City, Pa.), new radiators, and new UP lettering, except nine units (MP 9013, 9015, 9018, 9022-9026, 9028) which were upgraded and released prior through June 1988; these nine units retained their Missouri Pacific lettering and were later relettered to Union Pacific, the upgrade program was completed in March 1989.
c. UP 9025 was actually the first to be relettered from Missouri Pacific to Union Pacific, completed on 12 May 1988 during wreck repairs from a wreck at Nugget, Wyo.; released from North Little Rock shops on 17 June 1988, nine days after the first unit on 8 June 1988.
d. A total of 27 units were renumbered to the UP 2600-2659 group in September 1995 through October 1996 (UP 2653, ex UP 9053, was the first, completed on 18 September 1995, and UP 2603 and 2608, ex UP 9003 and 9008, were the last, both completed on 15 October 1996).
e. Of the 27 units renumbered into the 2600-2659 group, a total of 12 units were renumbered into the later 600-659 group in October 1996 through December 1999 (UP 622, ex UP 2622, was the first, completed on 25 October 1996, and UP 656, ex UP 2656, was the last, completed on 9 December 1999); two units were retired as UP 2600s: UP 2655 was retired in July 1999, and UP 2638 was retired in September 1999.
f. A total of 22 units were renumbered direct from the 9000-9059 group to the 600-659 group in October 1996 through October 1999 (UP 619, ex UP 9019, was the first, completed on 25 October 1996, and UP 629, ex UP 9029, was the last, completed on 28 October 1999).
g. Of the original total of 60 units, two units (UP 2638 and 2655) were retired prior to the December 1999 renumber plan, the other 58 units are assigned UP 7942-7999; 34 units from the 600-659 group, 13 units from the 2600-2659 group, and 11 from the 9000-9059 group.
h. Renumbered to UP 7942-7999.
