By the time of the UP-SP merger, SP had repainted 23 units from their original D&RGW paint scheme to SP's newer "Speed Lettering" paint scheme. The first was ex D&RGW 3086, completed in July 1992. Although all were still D&RGW units, UP considered all 23 units to be SP locomotives. Included were:
- Three GP40s: D&RGW 3059, 3086, and 3138.
- Thirteen SD40T-2s: D&RGW 5350, 5351, 5352, 5368, 5378, 5380, 5387, 5388, 5393, 5394, 5397, 5399, 5412; ownership was transferred to SP at the same time.
- Seven SD50s: D&RGW 5504, 5510, 5511, 5513, 5514, 5516, and 5517.
