General Notes:
- D&RGW 3113, 3114, and 3115 (three units) were delivered in December 1972 with an experimental exhaust silencer that later became standard on EMD locomotives.
- D&RGW 3129 and 3130 were purchased to replace wrecked GP30 3025 and GP40 3058, both wrecked in August 1982; built as late production GP40-2s and fitted with corrugated radiator grilles, straight side frame rails, and sloped traction motor blower ducts.
- Original total of 37 units (D&RGW 3094-3130); two units (D&RGW 3108 and 3115) were retired by SP prior to the UP merger.
- Total of 35 units to UP at merger; D&RGW 3094, 3096-3100, 3102-3128 (31 units) were assigned UP 5242-5272 (not in D&RGW sequence); D&RGW 3095, 3101, 3129, and 3130 (four units) were assigned UP 5345-5348 (not in D&RGW sequence).
- At least three D&RGW GP40-2s had the "Rio Grande" lettering on their noses removed. These include D&RGW 3097, 3103 and 3116. This happened during various maintenance repaints by D&RGW, long before any UP repaints or patch renumberings. The reason is not known.
