UP 916, 917 were wooden "Baggage Dynamo" cars. (ORER, May 1912)

The May 1912 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) shows the UP 900 series cars as a mix of wooden and steel cars: UP 900-912, wooden; UP 913-915, steel; UP 916, 917, wooden; UP 918-925, steel. Later ORERs do not show this mix. This mix in 1912 could mean that before 1915, when all UP 900 series/3000 series cars were steel, there were indeed wooden cars with these car numbers, and that by 1915, the wooden cars had been retired and new steel cars numbered into the vacant numbers.

ORER for May 1912 shows all UP Baggage 1148-1166 as steel cars, which does not match other sources.

Barger shows OWRR&N 1148-1154 as Pullman-built in August 1909 (Pullman Lot 3672, Pullman Plan 2389), CS Class 60-B-1. This would make these cars among the first 10 Harriman-style cars built for UP or its subsidiaries.

a. Built as UP 1229; renumbered to UP 2035 in June 1915; renumbered to UP 1400 in October 1951; retired in June 1958.
b. UP 1229 was UP's first Harriman-style steel car. It was built by UP itself to Plan CB-4947, dated February 24, 1906, which was the basis for two experimental full postal cars. SP's Sacramento General Shops began construction of CP 4097 on June 11, 1906. Union Pacific’s Omaha shops started work on UP 1229 at about the same time. These cars were similar to the first steel coach (SP 1806), but there were differences. The underframe had the same two 12", 31.5-pound I-beam center sills, cast double body bolsters, and truss rods. However, the floors were not wood. Instead, Monolith (Portland cement) was applied over the corrugated steel sub-floor. The arch of the roof was slightly higher, resulting in height over roof sheets of 13' 10-9/16" instead of the 13' 8-3/16" on SP 1806. All subsequent Common Standard cars had 14-foot roof heights.
