The Oregon Short Line Railway was Union Pacific's standard gauge line across southern Idaho. Construction started in 1881 at a connection with Union Pacific in southeastern Wyoming, and was completed in 1884 at a connection with Oregon Railway & Navigation Company in northeastern Oregon, making for a complete railroad connection between Omaha and Portland.

Oregon Short Line Railway was one of the roads that Union Pacific fully controlled, and was part of the systemwide renumbering of all equipment in 1885, to bring all equipment into a common numbering system. In 1889, OSL was consolidated with several other railroads controlled by UP, to form the Oregon Short Line & Utah Nothern Railway.
