  1. In about 1914-1915, the 1640 series locomotives began having Schmidt superheaters installed; by 1937 UP 414 and 419 remained as saturated (non-superheated) locomotives; superheaters added 2,000 pounds to the locomotive weight.
  2. At some unknown date, UP 443 was rebuilt from 21x30 inches cylinders (simple), to 23x30 inches cylinders; larger cylinders increased UP 443's maximum tractive effort from 39,458 pounds to 41,412 pounds.
  3. UP 1640-1679 (later UP 420-459) were built as Vauclain compound in 1900; rebuilt to simple on the date shown above.

  • Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches
  • Cylinders: 15-1/2&26x30 inches

Description (as simple):

  • Cabside Class: C-57
  • Drive Wheel Diameter: 57 inches
  • Cylinders: 21x30 inches
  • Maximum Tractive Effort: 39,458 pounds
  • Weight on Drivers: 161,605 pounds
  • Weight in Working Order (Engine Only): 185,891 pounds
  • Weight in Working Order (Engine and Tender): 301,689 pounds
  • Fuel: Coal

General Notes:

  1. In about 1914-1915, the 1680 series locomotives began having Schmidt superheaters installed; by 1931 all had received superheaters, which added 2,000 pounds to the locomotive weight.
  2. UP 1698 and 1699 (later UP 478 and 479) were rebuilt within a year of their delivery to serve as test locomotives for a larger firebox design; the new design matched the design used on the UP's later 1901-1920 series of 2-8-0 locomotives built in 1903; the larger fireboxes resulted in an increase of 7,800 pounds of locomotive weight.
b. UP 1680-1699 (later 460-479) were built as Vauclain compound; rebuilt to simple on the date shown:
