General Notes:

  1. Built as UP 700-729; renumbered to UP 100-129 during October and November 1953 at Salt Lake, Las Vegas, or Los Angeles while in service on the South-Central District, working on the Utah and California Divisions. Some sources say that UP 124-129 may have been delivered as UP 100 series locomotives, however, UP 126 was positively identified as ex UP 726 by being able to see the old number 700 series road number beneath the new 100 series road number. UP 128 and 129 may have been delivered with those numbers, or may have received their 100 series road numbers after delivery but prior to entering service, possibly having their steam generators installed at the same time.
  2. UP 700-709 (later UP 100-109) were originally intended to be numbered as UP 1950-1959. A painting and lettering diagram was prepared showing those original numbers, but later changed to reflect the as-delivered numbers. A builder's photo of UP 703 at the EMD factory in Cleveland shows, upon digitally-enhanced examination, that the road number on the ends was D.S. 1953.
  3. Union Pacific's GP7s were operated long hood forward. The GP7s also had 24-inch exhaust stack extensions, low mounted headlights, emergency warning "Mars" lights, and an unusual number board arrangement on the long, forward hood. The regular headlights were mounted in line with the number boards, below the Mars light, 15 inches lower than the EMD standard.
  4. UP 108 was equipped with hump controls.
  5. UP 113, 120, 121, 123, 124, 125, and 129 were equipped with full pilot snow plows. UP 103 was equipped with General Steel Castings cast steel snowplows on each end.
  6. UP 100-127 were equipped with 1600 gallon fuel tanks.
  7. UP 128 and 129 were initially equipped with 800 gallon fuel tanks, with 800 gallon water tanks for their steam generators. After UP 129 had its steam generator removed in 1972 it was equipped with a 1200 gallon fuel tank.
  8. UP 128 and 129 were equipped with steam generators from the time of their initial setup by UP in November 1953; UP 128 retained its steam generator until retirement in August 1971; UP 129 had its steam generator removed in 1972.
  9. By July 1981 there were only four GP7s remaining on UP's roster: UP 103, 112, 121, 126. By March 1984 only UP 121 remained. UP 121 was last operated during the third week of July 1984.
  10. UP 100-119 were equipped with 16-567B engines; UP 120-129 were equipped with 16-567BC engines.
  11. UP 100-127 had 249,200 pounds operating weight
  12. While equipped with steam generators, UP 128 and 129 had 246,400 pounds operating weight in freight service; and 253,600 pounds operating weight in passenger service; at the time UP 129 had its steam generator removed, the unit was re-ballasted and had an operating weight of 249,200 pounds, the same as UP 120-127.
  13. UP 100-109 were built on EMD order 6483; UP 110-119 were built on EMD order 5245; UP 120-129 were built on EMD order 5305.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 82 MP units went to UP at merger, numbered MP 4600-4666 and 4670-4684 (three units, MP 4667-4669, were modified by MP to be B23-7Ms and were renumbered UP 257-259); numbers 167-169 are blank and not used.
  2. UP 100-149 were built as MP 2289-2338, the first group of MP locomotives to carry this series; renumbered to MP 4600-4649 in 1980 to avoid conflict with road number series of new GP38-2s.
  3. UP 150 (ex MP 4650) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 31 January 1986; UP 111 (ex MP 4611) was last, completed on 13 November 1991.
  4. Not equipped with dynamic braking.
  5. Prior to being renumbered to their UP numbers, thirteen (13) units were repainted to UP yellow and gray, with Missouri Pacific lettering, as shown in the unit histories, below.

Notes:

  1. A total of 50 units were retired and used as core units for rebuild to UPY 2600-series RP20GE Gen-Set units, their UPY numbers are as shown above.
  2. Of 10 units retired but as yet unaccounted for, four UP (ex-MP) B23-7s were sent to Mexico, and rebuilt by Ferrovias Mexicanas S.A. de C.V., San Luis Potosi, with 3'0" gauge (.914m) C-C trucks in August, 2007 for the Carbones de Cesar 2301-2304 in Columbia. They are now considered as model C23-7. Most of the coal hauling lines in Columbia are getting new C21-EMP units from GE in Brazil, but because of a full production schedule, these units were rebuilt in Mexico. Their UP numbers are not known. (information from Allen Copeland)
  3. UP 107 (ex MP 4607) is fitted with an EMD-design cab due to wreck damage repair while in service as MP 4607. (Other former MP units with EMD cabs)
  4. A total of 13 units were retired and converted to UPY 100-series CCRCL unit, with CCRCL denoting Control Cab, Remote Control Locomotive.
  5. UP 116 (ex MP 4616) operated as UP 4616 from 11 November 1985 until 4 August 1986, and was the first MP yellow unit to be lettered for Union Pacific; as with all other former MP units completed before July 1986, "North Little Rock" style lettering was used.
  6. A total of 10 units were retired during February to July 2005 and held for rebuild; all units were reinstated on 17 August 2005, then retired again upon actual rebuild.

  9. UP 128 (ex MP 4628) was sold to Boise Locomotive Co., Boise, Idaho, on 30 September 1999.
  10. MP 4636 (assigned UP 136) was wrecked on 23 June 1984 at Camden, Arkansas; retired on 1 January 1985.

UP 162 (ex MP 4662) was lettered for Union Pacific, but carried its old MP number, as UP 4662, from 22 November 1985 until 13 December 1985, when it was renumbered to UP 161 (1st), although the unit wasn't actually released for service until 6 January 1986. UP 161 (1st) was renumbered to UP 162 on 2 April 1986; throughout all these various identity changes, as UP 4662, UP 161, and UP 162, the lettering style remained constant as MP's own "North Little Rock" style.
