General Notes:

a. UP 2900-2909 were Union Pacific's last locomotives purchased from Alco Products, the successor to the American Locomotive Company (Alco). They were purchased in 1966 as part of a comparison between the EMD SD40, the GE U28C, and the Alco C630, all three of which were the most recent models for road freight locomotives on America's railroads. The reliability and maintainability of the EMD SD40 won out and the C630s remained as orphans until their retirement just six years later.
b. UP 2901 was previously published as becoming Cartier Railway 34; a check of the electrical cabinet (electrical locker) frame by Ed Bowers shows the number 3440 8, meaning that Cartier Railway (QCM) 34 was originally UP 2907/DM&IR 907. Other UP/DM&IR to QCM numbers may also be mixed up.
c. UP 2900-2909 had Alco order number 1252 (3440-01 through 3440-09).

General Notes:

a. Immediately upon delivery in April to July 1975, UP 2905- 2919 (15 units) were stored at Council Bluffs due to a business slowdown; part of a group of 52 new units (along with GP38-2s 2040-2059 and SD40-2s 3288-3304) that were given acceptance runs between Omaha and North Platte, then placed into storage to avoid having to pay on their equipment trusts, which wouldn't be activated until the units actually entered service; the new units were all in service by March 1976.
b. UP 2915-2919 were delivered new from GE equipped with 7FCL-16A1 engines, which had their 16 cylinder diesel engines configured with 14 power cylinders and two cylinders functioning as air compressors, a practice common in stationary power plants. All five units had their engines replaced with standard 7FDL-16E18 16-cylinder engines during 1977 and 1978.
c. UP 2955 was the last U30C on UP, retired on 19 September 1989.
