  1. UP 2653 was renumbered out of sequence from its planned UP 2866 series number (UP 2895); built as D&RGW 5367, renumbered to UP 4054 in November 1999, renumbered to UP 8624 in May 2000, renumbered to UP 2653 in February 2008.

General Notes:

  1. UP 2780 was renumbered to a number previously assigned to ex SP 8704, which was wrecked on 6 November 1999 at Buckeye, Iowa, and scrapped at the wreck site.
  2. UP 2780 was one of 84 units fitted with extended low noses for use in SP's radio-controlled mid-train helper service.
  3. UP 2780 was one of an original total of 239 SP/SSW units, numbered SP 8230-8321, SSW 8322-8326, SP 8327-8341, 8350-8371, SSW 8372-8376, SP 8377-8391, and 8489-8573; 231 units went to UP at merger; SP retired eight units (SP 8260, 8278, 8302, 8317, 8320, 8338, 8502, and 8507) prior to the merger.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 133 SP units went to UP at merger, numbered SP 8574-8706.
  2. Rebuilt for SP by MK Rail in April 1994 through February 1995 from units in its own lease fleet (MKCX) and from units purchased second-hand by MK Rail from other sources, including National Railway Equipment (NRE, NRL, and NHL), Helm Financial (HLC and NHL), and VMV Enterprises (VMV); all of the former C&NW units (including all former CR, and most of the former BN units) were purchased from either VMV or NRE; in the case of NRE, MK Rail acquired units either directly from NRE, or with NRE acting as broker between C&NW and MK Rail; although owned by C&NW, many former CR units never got C&NW numbers.
  3. SP 8574-8583, 8697-8706 (20 units) were rebuilt by MK Rail at Boise (Idaho) Locomotive Shop.
  4. SP 8584-8625 (42 units) were rebuilt by MK Rail at Hornell (N. Y.) Car Shop.
  5. SP 8626-8696 (71 units) were rebuilt by MK Rail at Mountaintop (Pa.) Locomotive Shop.
  6. The rebuilding effort for all 133 units included new EMD Dash 2-style controls and electrical cabinet, a 3000-horsepower 16-cylinder engine, SD40-2-style radiator cores, and SD45-style nine-blade radiator cooling fans.
  7. A total of 97 units (UP 2650-2658, 2660-2699, 2724-2733, 2735-2761, 2774-2782) were built as SD45s and retain their original carbody configurations.
  8. UP 2650-2658, 2776 (ex SP 8574-8582 and 8700, 10 units) were built as SD45s and were rebuilt by MK Rail using carbodies that were made very similar to standard SD40s by replacing their components with comparable GP40-style components made available from MK Rail's completion of 10 GP40WH-2s for Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC), also during 1994, which needed the SD45 components for installation of HEP (Head End Power).
  9. The former C&NW SD45s (33 units) were originally built without dynamic braking; the rebuilding by MK Rail included the addition of dynamic braking on these units.
  10. The three former N&W SD45 and four former Southern SD45s got lowered short hoods in place of their original high short hoods.
  11. UP 2659, 2700-2723, 2734, 2762-2765 (30 units) were originally built as SD40s and retain their original carbody configurations.
  12. UP 2767-2772 (ex SP 8691-8696, six units) are former EL units, built as EMD SD45Ms (with carbodies similar to EMD's SDP45), and are 70 feet, 8 inches long, with 4900 gallon fuel tanks.
  13. UP 2684, as UP 4634 (ex SP 8608) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 28 August 1997.
  14. MK Rail used the SD40M-2 model designation; UP uses SD40-2.
  15. Assigned UP 4600-4732 in September 1997, three units renumbered, three units retired; assigned UP 2650-2782 in December 1999.

  5. UP 2680 (ex SP 8604) was the first of this group to be renumbered, completed on 10 April 2000.
  6. SP 8617 (assigned UP 4643, then UP 2693) was wrecked on 8 July 1998 at Redlands, California; sold for scrap to Pacific Rail Dismantlers. UP 2693 used by UP 7914 (ex UP 3283).
  7. UP 2702, as SP 8626, was wrecked on 21 June 2000 at Lufkin, Texas; renumbered to UP 2702, with unusual half-UP and half-SP paint scheme, on 27 July 2000 upon completion of wreck damage repairs.
  8. SP 8628 (assigned UP 2704) was wrecked as the second unit of a UP cement train on November 10, 2007 involved a rear-end collision with a stack train in Bertram, California; rebuld/retire status unknown. (information from Ryan Martin)

  11. UP 2748 has special logos applied to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the City of North Little Rock, Arkansas, in May 2004; first displayed at UP's North Little Rock shops on May 2, 2004.
  12. SP 8694 (assigned UP 2770) was wrecked as the lead unit of a UP cement train on November 10, 2007 involved a rear-end collision with a UP intermodal stack train in Bertram, California; rebuld/retire status unknown. (information from Ryan Martin)
  13. UP 2779 was renumbered from SP 8703 with cab side yellow patch on 3 April 2003; repainted full UP yellow and gray on 3 August 2006.
  14. SP 8704 (assigned UP 4730, then UP 2780) was wrecked on 6 November 1999 at Buckeye, Iowa (about 58 miles north of Des Moines); scrapped at wreck site.
