General Notes:
- UP 9387-9390 (along with C44ACs 6840-6845) are equipped to operate with fuel tenders UPT 5-8.
- UP 9400 has a sign on each side of locomotive, attached to the handrails, commemorating it as the 1,000th Dash 8 locomotive built by General Electric.
- UP 9405 has a nose plaque commemorating the J. C. Kenefick Safety Award given to Don Englert of Green River, Wyoming.
- UP 9400-9403 were equipped in May 1994 at Salt Lake City, Utah, with Locotrol III for tests in Distributed Power service; assigned to Distributed Power trains in Blue Mountains; during August 1994 the set was tested in stack train service between Chicago and Los Angeles.

General Notes:
- UP 9406-9480 model changed from C40-8W to C41-8W in September 1993; GE designation is Dash 8-40CW.
- UP 9406-9480 were delivered in 1990 and 1991 as 4000 horsepower, model C40-8W; upgraded in September 1993 to 4135 horsepower (model C41-8W) by adjusting the fuel rack settings.
- UP 9409, 9413, 9416 were leased to Canadian Pacific during February 1991 for evaluation of GE Dash 8 locomotives by that road; returned to UP during March 1991.
- UP 9480 was delivered to UP six months late, on 12 April 1992; equipped with GE Integrated Functional Computer (IFC) and Westinghouse (WABCO) Epic 3101 Electronic Braking; equipped with computer screens, replacing air gauges and electronics that replace air brake control valves; unit held at GE-Erie for testing until April 1992.
- UP 9484 carried number 9184 on its rear radiator compartment ends until late 1998.
Notes:
- UP 9412 (1st) was wrecked on 18 November 1995 at Laramie, Wyoming; scrapped at wreck site; UP 9412 number reinstated and applied as UP 9412 (2nd) to rebuilt UP 9274 in February 1996.
- UP 9412 (2nd) was rebuilt from wrecked 9274; renumbered to UP 9412 on 8 February 1996; UP 9274 was rebuilt using frame and other parts from wreck-damaged CSX 7770, which was purchased by UP from Helm Financial; the wreck repairs were completed and unit released for service on 18 February 1996. (CSX 7770 had been wrecked in a derailment on 6 July 1994; sold to Helm and stored at Metro-East Industries during mid-December 1994.)
- UP 9550 had a plaque on its nose commemorating the safety record of UP's DeSoto car shop. It had been removed by 1995, and as of 2021 is displayed in a resturant in Port Orchard, Washington.
- UP 9554 and 9555 were modified by GE during mid 1994 to burn natural gas, along with EMD SD60s 6364 and 6365; although converted to burn natural gas, the two units never formally entered service with the modifications; the natural gas program (actually called LNG, for Liquefied Natural Gas) progressed no further than extensive studies, and was cancelled due to increased costs for LNG, and technical difficulties for the locomotives themselves; both GE units were placed in operation using diesel fuel.

- UP 9554 had a plaque on its nose commemorating the safety record of UP's Salt Lake City shop.
- UP 9556 was wrecked on 23 April 2009 at Oakwood, Texas; also wrecked and retired were UP 3833 and UP 4479.
