General Notes:

  1. UP's "Green Goats" (low emissions, battery-diesel hybrid switching locomotive) were designed by Railpower Technologies, Inc.; built under contract by at least three separate locations: Motive Power Industries, Boise, Idaho; Canada Allied Diesel (CAD,) Lachine, Que.; Ogden Shops, Calgary.
  2. Railpower model designation is GG-20B; UP model designation is GG20GE, meaning Green Goat, 2000 horsepower, underframe from GE core unit (retired B23-7 and B30-7 units); equipped with GE 752AF traction motors.
  3. Builder number shown is actually just a portion of each unit's actual builder number, which follows the 17-digit standard used by vehicle manufacturers. All have a 8-digit prefix of 1RPGGB20 denoting a U. S. company (1), RailPower as the manufacturer (RP), Green Goat as the product (GG), riding on four-wheel trucks (B) with 2000 horsepower (20). A ninth digit (not shown) is a computer check digit. In the eight digits shown above, the first two digits denote Super Steel as the builder (6), with 2005 as the model year (5). The remaining six digits are a simple sequence of serial numbers. (Example, from UP 2315: 1RPGGB20665000062)
  4. Initial assignment was Houston, Texas, with funding from a public grant from the Texas Emissions Reduction Program (TERP); UPY 2300 arrived in Houston in early September 2005.
  5. See Extra 2200 South, Issue 128, page 21 for additional background information on the design of these units.
  6. UPY 2313 and 2314 arrived in West Anaheim yard in Southern California in late November 2006, for use on local trains to Marlboro, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach.
  7. UPY 2315 was rebuilt from NS B23-7 3981, which was cut down earlier in 2006 at RMDI and frame and trucks shipped out. It was one of over a dozen Dash 7 units being cut down at Pittston, Pa., and Utica, N.Y. for Railpower's GG20B program. NS 3981 was built for the Southern in January 1979, b/n 41990.

General Notes:

  1. Railpower model designation is RP-20BD; UP's model designation is RP20GE, denoting that the units were built using retired GE units as core units. Some of the frames were being "prepared" for Railpower by Metro East Industries (MEI) in St. Louis.
  2. Builder number shown is actually just a portion of each unit's actual builder number, which follows the 17-digit standard used by vehicle manufacturers. All have a 8-digit prefix of 2RPBDB20 denoting a Canadian company (2), RailPower as the manufacturer (RP), Battery Diesel as the product (BD), riding on four-wheel trucks (B) with 2000 horsepower (20). A ninth digit (not shown) is a computer check digit. In the eight digits shown above, the first two digits denote Super Steel as the builder (6), with 2004 as the model year (4). The remaining six digits are a simple sequence of serial numbers.
  3. These low emissions, diesel switching locomotives were designed by Railpower Technologies, Inc.
  4. All units built under contract for Railpower: UPY 2602-2684 were built for Railpower by Super Steel Schenectady, Inc., Glenville, N.Y.; UPY 2685-2698 built by Canada Allied Diesel (CAD), Lachine, Que.
  5. Equipped with three stand-alone Deutz generator sets (known as Gen-Sets), each producing 673 horsepower a piece, for a total of 2000 horsepower.
  6. Initial assignment will be Houston, Texas, with funding from a public grant from the Texas Emissions Reduction Program (TERP).
  7. UPY 2600 and 2601 are blank and not used.
