  1. Rebuilt from retired MP SW7s, SW8s, and SW9s by MP's Pike Avenue Shops, North Little Rock, Arkansas; mated with former MP MP15s, and GP38-2s (after October 1990).
  2. UPY 904 was equipped with EMD Flexicoil trucks at the time of its sale to Juniata Terminal in April 2009.

  1. UPY 904 was sold at auction on 2 April 2009 at San Antonio, Texas; sold to Juniata Terminal at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, numbered as 8850; seen en route on 4 May 2009 at Camden, New Jersey.
  2. UP S13 (assigned UPY 907) was converted to CCRCL control cab unit and renumbered to UPY 102 on 22 January 2002.
  3. UP S20 (assigned UPY 914) was converted to CCRCL control cab unit and renumbered to UPY 100 on 10 December 2001.
  4. UP S26 (assigned UPY 920) was converted to CCRCL control cab unit and renumbered to UPY 101 on 22 January 2002.
  5. UPY 921 was converted to CCRCL control cab unit and renumbered to UPY 104 on 21 February 2002.
  6. UPY 923 was converted to CCRCL control cab unit and renumbered to UPY 103 on 14 February 2002.
  7. UPY 925 (ex UP S31) was the first unit in this group to be renumbered, completed on 18 February 2000.

General Notes:

  1. Built as MKT road slug 501 from wrecked MKT GP40 222; renumbered and repainted to UP S50 on 20 March 1989, at the same time as matching GP40 slug control units, UP 595 and 596 (ex MKT 226, 227), which are now UP 3000 and 3001.
  2. Operated with UP 3000 and 3001, former MKT GP40s.
  3. Model was changed from SL-1 to S4-B on 14 April 1992; changed from freight service to switching service on same date.

General Notes:

  1. Rebuilt from retired KCS GP30s by Morrison Knudsen, Boise, Idaho.
  2. Equipped with 2,600 gallon fuel tanks, and pumping equipment to transfer fuel between slug and attached slug control units; sensing monitors activate the pumps to keep fuel level equalized between the control units and the slug.
  3. All three road slugs operate with UP (former WP) GP40-2 slug control units.
  4. All three road slugs were renumbered from their S300-series numbers, to their UPY numbers at the same time that their assigned control units were renumbered from their 3000-series numbers to their new 1500-series numbers; these road slug were assigned to the comparably equipped GP40-2 control units as follows: UP 1535/UPY 929/UP 1536; UP 1537/UPY 927/UP 1538; UP 1539/UPY 928/UP 1540.
  5. During 2005, all three slug sets were assigned to the former MP Corbyn Yard at New Braunfels, Texas, northeast of San Antonio.

  1. Original total of 13 SP units; 10 units went to UP at merger; SP retired three units (SP 1603, 1604, and 1607) prior to the merger.
  2. Built by Southern Pacific in their own Sacramento (Calif.) shops from the road's own retired U25Bs.
  3. Equipped with 2900-gallon fuel tank and pumping equipment to transfer fuel from the slug and the attached control units; sensing monitors activate the pumps to keep the fuel level equalized between the control units and the road slug.
  4. Former SP designation was TEBU (Tractive Effort Booster Unit).
  5. Equipped to operate with former SP 7940-7959 group GP40-2s (built in April and May 1980) and former SSW 7960-7966 group GP40s (rebuilt in 1981 and 1982).
  6. SP 1601, 1608, 1609, 1613 stored by UP at North Platte, Nebraska, during late 1998.
  7. SP 1602 (assigned UP S312) was retired on 28 April 1997; sold to National Railway Equipment in July 1997.
  8. SP 1610 (assigned UP S317) was retired on 28 April 1997; sold for scrap to Louisville Scrap, 28 February 1998.

Notes:

  1. UPY 937, as UP S319 (ex SP 1612) was the first of this group to be repainted to the UP S311-S320 group, completed on 18 September 1997.
