Updated Rosters

The following roster listings include large amounts of recently discovered additional information, and are updated regularly.

Overview

While these rosters show all of the locomotives owned by the Los Angeles and Salt Lake and predecessor companies, many other locomotives were operated over the LA&SL lines, particularly from the 1940s to the end of use of steam power. The LA&SL was only one component of the vast Union Pacific System, which after 1915 organized a numbering and classification scheme that was applied to all organizational components of the system and their motive power. The scattered numbering groups of the different wheel arrangements and classes only makes sense when viewed from the perspective of the complete Union Pacific locomotive roster. The Union Pacific was not adverse to transferring locomotives around to meet the demands of traffic or special conditions. In the first 30-years of the LA&SL these locomotives were often renumbered upon transfer, but in later years this was not done and power was shifted about without changes in ownership or road numbers. Many LA&SL locomotives were sent elsewhere as well. When new Union Pacific locomotives were acquired after traffic levels picked up toward the end of the depression they were purchased corporately in the name of the parent company for use on the U.P., Oregon Short Line, Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Co. and the LA&SL . Thus it was possible to see the newer U.P. locomotives, such as the Challengers and 4-8-4s on the Salt Lake Route.

All diesel-electrics were of course owned by the U.P. and the Salt Lake Route was one of the first sections of the System to extensively use this form of motive power for freight, passenger and switching service. Eventually all mainline runs were powered by diesels, but pockets of steam power remained in Southern California and Utah for a time. Many LA&SL steam locomotives were serviceable and were transferred to other sections of the U.P. where they were used until almost the end of steam service.

In 1907, all engines numbered above 100 were renumbered by adding 3000 to the road number. This was done at the request of the AT&SF to avoid confusion with that roads' engines of the same road numbers in the district where joint operations were conducted between San Bernardino and Daggett, California. Since the renumbered engines carried their original series for such a short time, they will be listed here keyed to their 1907 numbers. Later locomotives were delivered with post-1907 numbers already assigned.

When the SPLA&SL was taken over by Union Pacific subsidiary Los Angeles & Salt Lake in August, 1916 it was determined that some of the locomotives carried numbers that conflicted with Union Pacific system numbers adopted in 1915. Accordingly, some engines, principally older 4-4-0's and 4-6-0's, were assigned numbers to fit into the UP scheme. Other power continued to run under their old numbers until 1925, when they were also renumbered (the two Shays were an exception and continued to run with their SPLA&SL numbers until disposal). New power received UP system numbers as built, and transfers from other Union Pacific components were renumbered to fit into the LA&SL roster. After 1916, all locomotives were lettered for the Union Pacific, with ownership indicated by small "LA&SL" lettering on the locomotive cab and tender. In the interest of space, LA&SL locomotives in existence after 1916 will be listed with their final Union Pacific classification and numbers.

Notes:

a. E-100 was built new for Glendale & Montrose Ry. #22. Road abandoned 12/30/30 and locomotive sold to LA&SL E-100 for use on former G&M tracks between Delay Drive Siding and Glendale. Electric service discontinued 1940 and locomotive sold Sep 1942 to UP subsidiary Yakima Valley Trans. Co. #297, Yakima, Washington. Locomotive was donated by UP in 1985 to Orange Empire Railway Museum, Perris, California.
b. E-101 was built as unmotored flat car for Pacific Electric #3072. Rebuilt in Pacific Electric shops to motorized work motor in 1903, No. 38. renumbered 1911 to #1537. Sold Mar 1916 to Glendale & Montrose #21. Changed by G&M from work flat to enclosed box motor. Sold to LA&SL after G&M abandoned, but little used and it is not believed that the locomotive ever was actually renumbered to E-101. Much of the time the locomotive was stored in the former G&M yard in Glendale, California. Sold for Scrap Sep 1936, Pennsylvania Iron & Steel Co., Los Angeles, California.

Roster Notes

Most of the abbreviations used here are conventional. In some cases, information is given on a single line with data listed on the road number, the wheel arrangement, driver diameter in inches, builders name (and works location if applicable), builders construction or serial number, date built or shipped, remarks and, renumbering information. Where information is lacking, a column will have a "?" or will be left blank. Where more complete data is available, the railroad classification and official specification information will be presented, especially on the post 1916 roster organized by the Union Pacific.

Additional specifications are loaded engine weight, weight on drivers, working boiler pressure (in pounds) and tractive effort in pounds.

Some locomotives in these lists were of the tank type (listed with a "T" suffix after the wheel arrangement). If information has come to light about the specific design of the tanks, there is an "ST" listed for saddle tank or "RT" for rear tank.

The number of trucks under the three Shay locomotives is indicated by a "2T" or "3T."

The Union Pacific System used the term "vacated" when referring to the date a locomotive was dropped from the active roster for disposal, usually by scrapping, although in later years some power was sold for scrap. If a locomotive was sold for further use, that term is shown and the new owner indicated, along with what information is known on the later history of the unit.

These rosters are based on material compiled by the late Gerald M. Best from Union Pacific files, his own extensive records and assistance by Richard Prince, the late Don Roberts, and the late Harold L. Goldsmith. This material has been augmented and updated with additional information that has come to light in recent years. The assistance of James J. Buckley, Donald Duke, and Joseph A. Strapac must also be recognized for their material assistance, wisdom in railway subjects and friendship. To all of you, a grateful thanks. The errors and omissions however, belong to me. -- PAC, 1988
