- (Information taken from Gordon McCulloh's UP Steam book.)
UP 618 was reported as being the last operating steam locomotive in Utah, when it was used as motive power on the Provo to Salt Lake City local in late May or early June 1958. It had previously been assigned to Provo and used occasionally to move molten iron from the Columbia-Geneva Steel Ironton plant, north about 11 miles to the U. S. Steel Geneva steel plant. UP 618 was stored serviceable (since late 1955) as a backup to the regular diesel yard switchers used for this assignment, and was used when a diesel yard switcher was not available. (UP's TR5s in the 1870 series were not yet assigend to Provo at this time.)
UP 618 was moved to the Utah State fairgrounds in Salt Lake City on Thursday July 10, 1958. (Deseret News, July 10, 1958)
