UP March 1999 Locomotive Fleet Changes

SP SW1500 2628 was reinstated to the roster on 3/8/99 after being retired by mistake on 2/28/99.

Life Extension SD40-2R rebuilds (10 units):

UP 3471, 3475, 3513, 3557, 3565, 3592, 3600, 3627, 3680, 3806

Life Extension SD40-2R rebuilds are in-kind rebuilds, with no change in outward appearance, other than new paint.

Rebuilt SD38-2R, rebuilt from SD40-2 (2 units):

UP 2842, completed on 3/31/99, ex UP 4302 (ex MP 3302)

Note: These are part of the 2836-2842 group for service at the new Roseville yard.

Note: This group of 33 units (UP 4733-4765) are being rebuilt by National Railway Equipment (NRE), Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Dixmoor, Illinois, using SD45 core units, with later units projected to use still more SD45s, plus some SD40s and SD39s, and maybe even the former UP SD40X demonstrator 3042. The rebuilding effort includes qualification and repairs as needed of all components other than the original 3,600 horsepower, 20-cylinder diesel engine (in the case of the SD45s) and the original 2,300 horsepower, 12-cylinder diesel engine (in the case of the SD39s). The SD45's original 20-cylinder diesel engine was replaced by a 3,000 horsepower, 16-cylinder engine. The units retain their original SD45 carbodies. The core units were owned by NRE previously; many were purchased by NRE in November 1997 when they purchased the assets of the bankrupt Precision National Corporation (PNC), including its rebuild facility at Mount Vernon, Illinois Included in these assets were the former UP SD45 41 (retired by UP in January 1987 and sold to PNC in January 1988), and the Sulzer-powered SD45Ms (retired by UP in December 1983 and sold to PNC in October 1987).
