Lease Expired Units (32 units)

The lease on 32 former SP and SSW GP40-2s in the SP/SSW 7240-7273 group expired on 31 March 2000. The units were built in October and November 1984 and were retired by UP during April; they were moved by their owner to National Railway Equipment in Silvis, Illinois, during April for storage. Included were: SP 7240-7246, UP 5217 (ex-SP 7247), SSW 7248-7254, SP 7255, SSW 7256, 7257, 7259-7263, SP 7264, SSW 7265, 7266, UP 5236 (ex-SSW 7268), SSW 7259-7273. Two units (SSW 7258, 7267) were retired by SP prior to the UP merger. The group was assigned UP 5210-5241, but only two units were renumbered prior to retirement; they were assigned UP 1310-1341 in the new renumber plan.
