UPED 2 was purchased second hand in 1864, named "Delaware"; to KP 2 in 1869; to UPRy 820 in 1885; rebuilt in April 1886; to UP 820 in 1898; to UP 938 in 1915; vacated in 1923 (previous ownership prior to UPED is unclear; previous research by others suggests that UPED 2 was built in 1855 as Lehigh Valley number 5 "Delaware")

Description:

  • Drive Wheel Diameter: 63 inches (rebuilt to 60 inches in 1881)
  • Cylinders: 14x22 inches (rebuilt to 14x20 inches in 1881)

General Notes:

  1. UPED 3 was purchased secondhand by UPED as their number 3; built as one of UPRR's first locomotives in August 1864, named "Lt. General Grant" (before locomotive numbers were used); cost $15,450; sold in December 1864 to commission merchant M. K. Jessup Company for $21,000; to Union Pacific Railway Eastern Division 3. (from R. E. Prince data; one of UP's first locomotives; sold as surplus prior to start of construction in July 1865)
