Motor Coach Age, the magazine of the Motor Bus Society, published a four-part history in 1987-1988 of buses in Salt Lake City and other cities in northern Utah. Back issues are long out of print and unavailable, so to preserve this vital part of the history of transportation in Utah, the text of the articles is presented here:

Bus World -- An excellent article about Salt Lake City's electric coaches, also known as trackless trolleys.

Salt Lake City Lines, 1944 - 1970

(Source: Motor Coach Age, Volume 39, Number 3, March 1987, page 7.)

Buses purchased by Salt Lake City Lines from Utah Light & Traction, April 27, 1944, and new buses purchased prior to the renumbering in February, 1945:

Quantity Type UL&T
Numbers
147 Gas Coaches 20-24, 40, 43, 47, 59-79, 80-96, 101-148, 201, 251-286, 501-516
26 Electric Coaches 300-311, 315-321, 399-405
8 Electric Streetcars

New buses in 1944-1945:

16 GM TD-4007 224-239 40 1945

Note:

1. Buses delivered prior to February, 1945 on some PCL properties were numbered according to the system previously in use there; thus the first 15 gas GM's might have been 600's. Similar buses on California properties were in the 900's, so that possibility also exists. The former UL&T buses were not renumbered.

Buses renumbered in February 1945 or acquired prior to March 1948:

Notes:

1. These number groups were part of a system-wide Pacific City Lines scheme in which the first two digits represent the year of the order.

Buses renumbered March 1948 or acquired prior to the 1953 National City Lines administration:

General Notes:

a. These number groups were part of a PCL scheme whereby the first digit represented the system; in this case, "3" denoted Salt Lake City Lines. The second digit represented the capacity of the bus, i.e. 0 = 40, 5 = 45, and 6 = 36. SLCL buses above did not get NCL numbers after 1953 if they stayed in Salt Lake City. If they were transferred to other NCL properties, as some were, they were put into the sequential NCL system at that time.

Notes:

1. The erratic numbering appears to have been due to some kind of assigned permit numbers; see the photograph of Airway Motor Coach 34 printed with Part I of this history.
2. This roster, not available when the earlier parts of the Salt Lake City history were printed, was found by Don Strack [in 1987 while doing research in Utah Public Service Commission files] and submitted by P. Allen Copeland.
