UP 25779
UP 25779 was built in 1923 as UP 2655; renumbered to UP 25779 in December 1963; retired by UP in September 1967; sold to and preserved by the Lonie Bahr family in Falls City, Nebraska, until donated and moved to Moffat Road Railroad Museum in Granby, Colorado, in October 2010.
From the Moffatt Road Railroad Museum website:
1923 CA-1 Class Caboose
The full restoration of this wooden CA-1 Class caboose was completed in May 2021. In addition, over 100 curated items fill the caboose to help visitors "step back in time" to picture what it was like to be either a brakeman or conductor.
About the Caboose
We have had the Caboose for 9 years [since 2010] and have made progress especially in the last 2 years [2019-2021]. The pot belly stove is a large caboose stove donated by Chuck and Barbara Houck. The Caboose came 70 percent complete but only 15 percent integrity. We needed to rebuild most of the framing and almost all of the siding. The interior was totally restored. This caboose was built by the Mt. Vernon Car Company in May of 1923 with the original number of 2655. It was renovated [renumbered only] in December 1963 and retired in September 1967. It is only one of 175 made from 1913 to 1924. Very few are left. It was very rare to find an all wood caboose in as excellent condition as this one was and the caboose had not been modified.
On December 27, 2010, the Moffat Road Railroad Museum received the 1923 Caboose as the first piece of railroad equipment for the Railroad Interpretive Park. This piece of equipment was a generous donation from the Lonie Bahr family in Falls City, Nebraska. The caboose arrived from Nebraska by truck and we used a crane to move it from the truck to its final destination in the Interpretive Center Park. The caboose trucks were donated by the U.P. The U.P. was very generous and provided a truck and driver to bring the trucks (wheels) to us from Cheyenne and set them on the 40 feet of rail that we laid recently and no charge! They also provided the 40 feet of rail – 25 ties and a bucket of spikes! Special thanks to the U.P.!!
General Notes (UP 25740-25799):
- UP 25741 was sheathed with plywood as a test to replace the original tongue and groove sheathing.
- UP 25766 was rebuilt with a side door on each side.
- Blank numbers above were assigned but not used.
Notes:
- UP 25741 is located at Bancroft, Idaho
- UP 25742 disposition unknown; some records show this caboose as being donated to the Camp 6 Logging Museum; the correct number for the Camp 6 caboose is 25722.
- UP 25752 (ex UP 2580) was donated in July 1970 to Smoky Hill Historical Society, Lenexa, Kansas (about 10 miles southwest of Kansas City); museum moved to Belton, Missouri (20 miles south of Kansas City).
- (This is *not* the caboose that was donated to the Stuhr museum in Grand Island. That caboose, also a CA-1, was likely the former UP 3601.)
- UP 25755 was donated (Union Pacific records do not show who or where the caboose was donated to).
- UP 25766 was restored for display in April 1972 by UP's Omaha shops; displayed at Expo '74 at Spokane, Washington during summer 1974; held as part of historical collection at Cheyenne, Wyoming; donated to Ogden Union Station, Ogden, Utah in 1979, delivered on February 22, 1984.
- UP 25771 was wrecked on June 2, 1966 at Altamont, Wyoming
- (UP 25779, see note, above)
- UP 25783 was burned on 20 July 1967 at Salt Lake City, Utah
- UP 25784 was donated to Pocatello Area Chamber of Commerce, Pocatello, Idaho; first used as information center, then moved for display to Ross Park; displayed as OSL 5784, with 2-8-2 2005 and DDA40X 6901.

Notes:
- UP 25804 was, as of April 2011, being restored by Boulder Valley Historical Society, Boulder, Colorado; the caboose came from Montbello, Colorado, and later from Dacono, Colorado.
- As of March 2015, the caboose is shown as for sale. (Railway Preservation News)
- As of March 2017, UP 25804 (ex OSL 3171) is to be moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
- Additional information from a photo taken in June 2006: "UP 3171 was built in 1923 and retired in 1966. It is a standard UP class "CA-1" wood caboose and is typical of cabooses that the UP would have used on the Boulder Branch. CA-1's could be found at the end of UP freight trains into the 1960's. Following its retirement, #3171 was used to promote the Montbello Business Park along I-70 east of Denver from 1967 to the early 1980's. #3171 was donated to the BCRHS in 2001 and is painted "Armour Yellow", the standard color for UP cabooses after World War II."
