Overview
(This page covers only cabooses on MP at the time of the merger with UP in 1982. It is not intended to be a complete history of Missouri Pacific cabooses.)
Missouri Pacific Railroad was controlled by Union Pacific after December 22, 1982. At that time, MoPac had 651 cabooses, including 407 bay window cabooses, 208 cupola cabooses, and 36 transfer cabooses. Based on the cars' characteristics, UP assigned caboose classes CA-19 through CA-35 to these 651 cars.
The number-by-number listing below covers the 651 remaining MP cabooses at the time of the MP-UP merger, including all known retirements and dispositions, including donations.

By May 1995, there were still 77 former MoPac cabooses in active service. Included were five extended vision cupola cabooses, MP 13523-13647, and 72 compact body bay window cabooses, MP 13000-13098, 13697-13964.
No MP cabooses are known to have been renumbered to UP, or repainted to UP's yellow paint scheme, except MP 13563 and MP 13737, which were painted yellow, with a UP shield, possibly as early as 1997. Both worked out of Addis, Louisiana. (photos)

- MP 11000 class cabooses were used in yard and transfer service.

- "Short Bay Window Caboose" 17 feet, 10-1/8 inches cabin, with bay widows, centered on frame; 41 feet, 7-3/4 inches over coupler pulling faces; 51,800 pounds light weight.

These are not transfer cabooses at all. These are regular road cabooses that the Mopac made hundreds of and they were seen on almost every Mopac train in the 1980s. Not very common for transfer cabooses. They were classed as and used as road cabooses for most of their service life. The 13xxx nunbering signifies mainline road duty and one was even tested by the Union Pacific in the development of their CA-11 caboose which I've never heard called a transfer caboose. International Car proposed the first 50 cars in 1976, saying they could be built at $41,887 a car. MP never actually placed an order with International Car for any cabooses, deciding instead to build the whole roster of "platform-type bay-window cabooses" as they are referred to in the official drawings. These plans were later revised slightly and copied by the UP for their CA-11, CA-11A, and CA-12 class cabooses. Home built in MP's Desoto Shops and finished in the Sedelia Shops, they were the last cabooses built by the Missouri Pacific and lasted into the UP merger, and a few even remain today. The reason they were so small is because they did not need all the extra space, and furnishings that older cabooses had, in turn this saved them money.

- MP 13542 was prototype for caboose rebuild program at Sedalia, completed in early 1977. By October 1977, about 50 cars from the 13715-13814 series had been completed.
- "Short Bay Window Caboose", 17 feet, 10-1/8 inches cabin, with bay widows, centered on frame; 41 feet, 7-3/4 inches over coupler pulling faces; MP 13542 built with 51,600 pounds light weight; MP 13715-13814 built with 51,200 pounds light weight.
- UP (ex-MP) 13737 painted yellow, in about September 1997.
Prototype for this series was completed in 1977, numbered as MP 13542, retired by UP in April 1986.
