General Notes:
- Equipped with 16-567BC engines rather than normal for GP18 16-567D1 engines. Also equipped with four 3-foot radiator fans rather than two 4-foot radiator fans, as on a normal GP18. This change in design configuration is explained by the use of several components from the six 6500 class F3s that were used as direct trade-in units. At least one unit, C&NW 1779, was wrongly stenciled during its career as a GP9.
- C&NW 1776 painted in a red, white, and blue scheme in August 1975 to commemorate the 200th birthday of the United States of America. Repainted back to normal C&NW yellow and green in early December 1978.
- EMD order number 7585.

General Notes:
- Built as part of group MP 734-753 (20 units), renumbered to MP 3034-3053 in May 1978; acquired by UP through merger on 22 December 1982 (none painted yellow and gray or assigned UP numbers); 15-year lease expired in July 1984, returned by UP to owner/lessor, U. S. Leasing Corp.; all 20 units sold by U. S. Leasing to VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky, during 1984. VMV added the units to its national lease fleet, lettered for either VMV or Paducah and Louisville Railroad (P&L), both owned by the same parent Corp.
- Above 14 units leased by CNW from VMV between mid September 1988 and mid August 1989. The units had previously been leased to the SP, from mid 1987 to mid 1988. At least two units were painted in VMV's blue and silver "Paducahbuilt" scheme. Those units still in MP blue paint while on lease to CNW were nicknamed "Blue Devils". Many of these leased VMV units had a C&NW herald applied to their cab sides.
- EMD order number 7144.
Notes:
- Returned to VMV, August 1989; sold to Morrison Knudsen, Boise, Idaho; rebuilt to CSXT SD40-2s during July through October 1990. For specific unit numbers, see Diesel Era, Volume 2, number 5 (September/October 1991), p.20.

- The FP9s had 1,500 horsepower, instead of the 1,750 horsepower for an EMD F9, due to the few FT components that were used in the FP9s.
- Equipped with dynamic braking as FTAs; the FP9s did not have dynamic braking.
- C&NW 4052A, as an FP9, was equipped with Cummins train-lighting generator for suburban service in March 1969, removed by March 1970.

General Notes:
- C&NW 4056A, 4056C, 4064A, and 4064C were Phase I F3 locomotives. The following comes from Railway Prototype Cyclopedia, Volume 6:
- "Additional information has been received regarding the EMD F3A Phase I locomotives, and the F3A roster shown on page 76 of RP CYC Volume 5 requires correction. The CNW purchased four additional F3A locomotives that have been confirmed as Phase I units when built. They were the road numbers 4056A/C (builder's numbers 4461-4462) and 4064A/C (builder's numbers 4463-4464). The units were originally ordered by Monon, but the order was canceled. The units were sold to CNW per EMD Order No. E867 and delivered February 1947. Unlike other F3 Phase I units built for CNW, these came with large 45° number boards and lacked dynamic brakes. They were equipped with dual headlights, exposed coupler pilots, and high fans, but lacked steam generators. The tally of F3A Phase I units should be changed to add these four CNW locomotives." (The information in Railway Prototype Cyclopedia included a photo of C&NW 4056A and 4064A taken at Butler, Wisconsin, on June 21, 1948.)
- This corrects the information presented in the caption of the photo on page 186 of Diesels Of The Chicago and North Western published in 1995 by Withers Publishing Company. That photo showed C&NW 4056C with a note that it was "rebuilt with a host of parts from several sources, including an F7 style nose".
