- C&NW 4431-4440 Built as New York Central GP7s, renumbered to Penn Central, and again to Conrail. Sold by Conrail to PNC in October 1979, resold to C&NW in April 1980. Converted from long hood forward operation to short hood forward upon rebuild by C&NW during 1981

- C&NW records show both C&NW 4435 and 4460 as ex-SLSF 572. Other sources show C&NW 4435 as ex-CR 5783 and C&NW 4460 as ex-SLSF 572
- C&NW 4448 and 4452 were built as C&O GP9s 5918 and 6229. The C&O units were sold to PNC in July 1973 and were in lease service as PNC 1701 and 1706, both painted yellow and green
- C&NW 4449 was built in 1953 Canada as QNS&L 117 by EMD's Canadian subsidiary.
- C&NW 4456 and 4462 were built as D&RGW 5110 and 5111. D&RGW sold the units to CRI&P in November 1972, becoming CRI&P 4206 and 4207. CRI&P traded the two units to PNC in May 1977 as part of the rebuilding of the 120 unit lease fleet for CRI&P. The units were in lease service as PNC 4206 and 4207, painted in yellow and green

General Notes:
- C&NW 4496-4499 built as standard GP9s for Union Pacific. UP rebuilt the units as part of their GP9 turbocharging program during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The units were retired and sold to Precision National Corp., Mount Vernon, Illinois, in late 1976
- Purchased from PNC by GE Railcar and leased to C&NW in April 1977, minus their prime movers and generators, along with the 21 other units that became C&NW 4379-4399. Former UP 301, 322, and 342 had different carbody configurations, having been equipped with single exhaust stacks from their 2,000 horsepower prime movers. C&NW rebuilt the units as GP9Rs, replacing the missing engines and generators and adding chopped short hoods. The units may not have been completed and placed in service on C&NW with their original carbodies because some swapping of carbody long hoods took place during the C&NW rebuilding
Notes:
- Lease expired; returned to lessor GE Railcar Services, December 1989; sold to OmniTrax (GWRX), February 1991
