General Notes:

  1. Built as New York Central 3010-3035, renumbered to PC 3010-3035 after merger of New York Central and Pennsylvania in 1968 which formed Penn Central. Renumbered to CR 3010-3035 after formation of Conrail in 1976. Returned by CR to lessor/owner in 1980 upon expiration of 15 year lease. The original owner/lessor sold all 25 units (PC 3024 wrecked and retired by PC) to Precision National Corp. in July 1980.
  2. C&NW leased the units from PNC in late 1980 and purchased all but 5502 on 10 March 1981. C&NW 5502, ex CR 3012, was taken into C&NW accounts on 1 July 1981. All 25 units were rebuilt between June and December 1981 at Oelwein shops, using new electrical cabinets and modifications to the throttle and dynamic braking controls. These were among the first, if not the actual first locomotves to receive the new Safety Yellow paint scheme, also known as "Zito Yellow."
  3. Equipped with Automatic Train Control and Automatic Train Stop.

  1. C&NW 5514 was sold to Helm Financial, reconditioned and leased to UP as UP 886 in December 1989.

General Notes:

  1. Built as New York Central 3036-3049, renumbered to PC 3036-3049 after merger of New York Central and Pennsylvania in 1968 which formed Penn Central. Renumbered to CR 3036-3049 after formation of Conrail in 1976. Returned by CR to lessor/owner in 1980 upon expiration of 15 year lease. The original owner/lessor sold all 13 units (PC 3043 wrecked and retired by PC) to Precision National Corp. in July 1980.
  2. C&NW leased the units from PNC in late 1980 and purchased the 13 units in March 1981. All 13 units were rebuilt between June and December 1981 at Oelwein shops. These were among the first, if not the actual first locomotves to receive the new Safety Yellow paint scheme, also known as "Zito Yellow."
  3. C&NW 5525, as NYC 3036, was the first production GP40 using EMD's new 645 engine.
  4. Equipped with Automatic Train Control and Automatic Train Stop.
  5. Equipped with dynamic braking.
  6. EMD order number 7851.

Notes:

  1. C&NW 5530 was sold to Helm Financial, reconditioned at CN's Montreal shops and leased to UP as UP 883 in February 1990.
  2. C&NW 5536 was wrecked (roll-over), sold to Helm Financial, reconditioned and wreck damage repaired and leased to UP as UP 870 in December 1989.

  1. C&NW 6000 built as PRR SD45 6224, renumbered to PC 6224, renumbered to CR 6224, sold to C&NW 6547, rebuilt by C&NW to SDCAT, using a 12-cylinder Caterpillar 3612 engine, completed in February 1986. Derated to 3,000 horsepower because of limitations of EMD AR-10 alternator.
  2. Stored out of service, since January 1990, because of odd combination of CAT 3612 engine and EMD AR-10 alternator; the unit is also extremely heavy, at 410,300 pounds.
  3. Equipped with high pressure air starter system.

Twenty units stored on BN until mid October 1985 when they were moved to C&NW's Proviso Yard for storage. Four units were sold to New York, Susquehana & Western; remaining 16 units (along with 12 former BN F45s) moved by C&NW in December 1985 to Oelwein, Iowa, for storage.
  2. C&NW leased the 16 SD45s in December 1985, purchasing 12 units in September 1986. Some of these units may not have actually received a C&NW number prior to being retired.

The air start system was removed in 1987 (due to repeated air turbine failures) and replaced with standard EMD, DC electric starter motors.
