General Notes:

  1. C&NW 6622-6643 built as Southern Railway (SOU) SD24s, with high short hoods. Southern retired and sold 41 SD24s to Precision National Corp. in January 1978. PNC leased the units (lettered as PNC 6300s and still in Southern Railway black paint) to Milwaukee Road and later to BN. PNC had the Southern units rebuilt (by Milwaukee Road and Morrison Knudsen) during mid and late 1979 as 1,800 horsepower, non-turbocharged units. (previous SOU information changed from that previously shown, including data printed in the Withers book.)
  2. C&NW 6644-6647 built as Union Pacific SD24s, with low short hoods. The Union Pacific SD24s were sold to PNC in November 1977 as part of the sale of 90 UP units. The UP SD24s were rebuilt to 1,800 horsepower, without turbochargers, by Morrison Knudsen in April 1980.
  3. C&NW first leased 25 units (of the original 53 units in PNC 1800 class), beginning in late November 1980, and bought 26 units from PNC on 31 March 1982. PNC called the units SD10s, C&NW calls them SD18Rs. C&NW began painting the units in the then-current "Zito" yellow scheme in early August 1982.
  4. C&NW 6622-6643 have EMD order number 5606; C&NW 6644-6647 have EMD order number 5602.
  5. Not equipped with dynamic braking. All units equipped with dynamic braking when built; removed at time of rebuild for PNC; units retain original carbody dynamic braking hatch, with openings blanked over.

Notes:

  1. C&NW 6910 was wrecked on 13 September 1986 at La Moille, Minn., retired on 19 November 1987, sold to National Railway Equipment Co., Dixmoor, Illinois, February 1990; wreck damage repaired, unit used in NRE's national lease fleet as NRE 6910, sold to CP 5447.
  2. C&NW 6912 was wrecked on 15 July 1976, retired on 8 December 1980.
  3. C&NW 6922 was in-shop undergoing normal scheduled maintenance in mid 1987 when its long hood was used to repair UP SD40-2 3579, which had been damaged while in service on C&NW. UP 3579 was repaired by C&NW and returned to UP in September 1987, with the long hood from C&NW 6922, with its C&NW number spray-painted out and UP 3579's number painted over the C&NW patch. UP 3579 was sent directly to North Little Rock to be repainted in full UP colors. C&NW 6922 was returned to service with the long hood from UP 3579, after the damage had been repaired.
