General Notes:

  1. D&RGW Class DE B-B 60.
  2. D&RGW 5101-5104 had the solid side sill above the fuel tank; all others had the later feature of "inspection" holes common to all EMD GP units throughout the 1950s.
  3. The first GP7s delivered to D&RGW, in October 1950, were numbered 5101-5104, keeping the four unit locomotive concept established with the earlier F units. That concept was abandoned in late 1950, and 5104 (1st) was renumbered to 5100 in November 1951. Subsequent deliveries in June 1952 began with a new 5104, and were numbered sequentially to 5113.
  4. Ten units (D&RGW 5101, 5102, 5103, 5105, 5106, 5107, 5110, 5111, 5112, 5113) were sold to Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (CRI&P, Rock Island) on 6 November 1972, in exchange for Rock Island sending nine of its retired F units (eight F7As and one FP7) to EMD as trade-in credit for D&RGW's 1972 order of GP40-2s (3094-3105). The 10 units were in service on Rock Island for just 18 months, but were troublesome due to their well-worn state and the non-standard (for Rock Island) dynamic brakes, air brakes, and control circuitry. They were some of the first candidates for rebuild under Rock Island's Capital Rebuild Program in 1974, in which Rock Island sold 120 (110 GP7s and 10 GP9s) units to Precision National Corporation, and leased them back as CRI&P 4425-4488, and 4500-4555. Of the 10 ex D&RGW GP7s, five were rebuilt to CRI&P GP7Rs for Precision by Morrison Knudsen at Boise, Idaho, and by Illinois Central Gulf at Paducah, Kentucky The other five units were sold to Precision and used in its national lease fleet, to replace five other units Precision had furnished to Rock Island in the earlier days of the rebuild program.
  5. Of the 10 GP7s that were sold to CRI&P, seven found their way to C&NW when C&NW bought 119 Rock Island GP units in February 1981. Of those seven, two were retired by C&NW and five remained in operation after the 1995 merger with UP. The last, C&NW 4118 (ex D&RGW 5113) was retired in April 1998.
  6. D&RGW 5100-5103 were built under EMD order number 5034.
  7. D&RGW 5104-5113 were built under EMD order number 5093.
  8. Of the 14 units, seven units had a snowplow installed on both ends, two units had a snowplow installed to only the front end, and five units were not equipped with a snowplow; D&RGW 5108 was apparently equipped with plows in the time period between 1962 and 1971 while assigned to Alamosa; D&RGW 5102 has been reported as having a snowplow. General Notes:

  1. D&RGW's 26 SD45s were delivered in two different orders: D&RGW 5315-5324 in January and February 1967; and D&RGW 5325-5340 in April and May 1968. These two groups of locomotive differ in their exterior appearance. The first group included low-mounted brake cylinders on their trucks, large snow plows and radiator fan guards with solid metal disks at their center. The second group included high-mounted brake cylinders on their trucks, smaller snow plows, and radiator fan guards that were all-wire, with radial supports.
  2. Many units were fitted with a radiator spray feature, including a 50 gallon water tank at rear of unit, inside carbody, and water spray heads below radiators. The feature was required to improve cooling while in operation in tunnels, and was replaced by the tunnel configuration on the SD40T-2s in 1974.
  3. D&RGW 5326-5328, 5336-5338 (six units) leased to UP as D&RGW's contribution to the equipment pool for the operation of unit coal trains for Kaiser Steel between Carbondale, Colo, and Sunnyside, Utah, and Kaiser Steel's steel plant at Fontana, California UP contributed 12 units to the pool (UP SD45s 3638-3649). In August 1980, D&RGW 5337 and 5338 were removed from the pool, leaving four units still leased to UP, including D&RGW 5326, 5327, 5328, and 5336, which were returned to D&RGW in December 1982 after the UP/MP/WP merger.
  4. D&RGW 5329 and 5333 were wrecked on 25 December 1968 at Crater, Colorado; wreck damage repaired by EMD and units returned to service in September 1969, wearing the new large lettering scheme.
  5. D&RGW 5322, 5326, 5327, 5328, 5329, 5331, 5333, 5334, 5336, 5337, 5338, 5340 (12 units) were painted with D&RGW's large Rio Grande lettering; D&RGW 5336 and 5337 were the first units completed, in August 1968.
  6. Most of D&RGW's SD45s were stored serviceable beginning in August 1985. During mid 1986, several were removed from storage and loaned to UP for pool power equalization, and in late 1986, several were loaned to BN for the same purpose. Several were also removed from storage during mid 1988, but were back in storage within a couple months.
  7. D&RGW 5315-5324 were built under EMD order number 7951.
  8. D&RGW 5325-5336 were built under EMD order number 7085.
  9. D&RGW 5337-5340 were built under EMD order number 7106.

General Notes:

  1. Equipped with EMD's Super Series wheel slip control.
  2. To reduce costs, these 17 units were built as an add-on order to a 20-unit Chessie System (B&O) SD50 order (EMD order 837081), for B&O 8576-8595 in July and August 1984. The units were essentially Chessie units in D&RGW paint, and included many Chessie features, such as "mail slot" battery box covers, hood mounted bell, Chessie air horns, and no signal light in the low nose, which was added for D&RGW upon delivery by Mid America Car in Kansas City.
  3. C&NW tested four newly completed D&RGW SD50s in late September and early October 1984. Delivered with builder dates of September 1984, the D&RGW units were tested on coal trains in C&NW's recently completed Powder River Subdivision. C&NW's own SD50s were delivered just over a year later. (part from CTC Board, December 1984, page 4)

D&RGW SD50s were loaned to C&NW for a demonstration on unit coal trains on from their new line to the Powder River Basin. This was before the units were sent to Mid America Car in Kansas City. The remainder of the order was delivered directly to Mid America for Gyralights and other D&RGW items. (Information from Galen Coupe.)
  4. D&RGW 5504, 5510, 5511, 5513, 5514, 5516, 5517 (seven units) were repainted to SP during 1994 to 1996, using the large version of the flying Southern Pacific lettering. D&RGW reporting marks were retained on the cab side.
  5. All of the former D&RGW SD50s were renumbered from their UP 5095-5111 series to the UP 9845-9861 series in 2002 to clear the 5000 series for use by new UP SD70Ms.
  6. All 17 units retired by UP on 15 June 2007 upon expiration of lease; returned to owner.
