Denver & Rio Grande Western, including Denver & Rio Grande And Rio Grande Western

(Standard gauge only)

This roster is based largely, with extensive editing for readability and continuity, on Herb Danneman's roster that was published as a CD as part of "Colorado Rail Annual No. 33, Rio Grande Standard Gauge Passenger Trains & Cars" published in 2018. This is an excellent book with a multitude of photos and other information and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Rio Grande passenger cars and trains.

Denver & Rio Grande

Two old Pullman cars Longview (Pullman 3/1872, Lot 10) and Parsons (Barney & Smith 11/1872, Lot 8) acquired by the D&RG in January 1903. The two cars were rebuilt by the D&RG into Chair Observation cars 770 and 771 respectively.

Three freight-style refrigerator cars (155, 166 and 168) were added in 1903, shown as "Bagg.-old refrigerator."

Mail & Baggage cars 606 and 609 were transferred to Baggage service (no change of numbers).

Mail & Baggage car 610 was removed between the 1903 and 1905 rosters. The car was burned in October 1903. It was listed in the December 31, 1903 D&RG Roster, meaning that the car was retired in 1904.

Six Baggage cars (670-675) were received from AC&F. New Baggage car 670 was wrecked in August 1903, leaving only five of the new Baggage cars on the year-end roster.

Coach & Baggage car 705 was destroyed in May.

Dining car 754-Denver was renamed Nomad (without the 754 number).

Twelve new Coaches numbered 860 to 871 were built by AC&F in September and October. Note: These twelve cars did not appear in D&RG Equipment Roster No. 3 of December 1, 1903.

1908

Denver & Rio Grande

The merger of the Rio Grande Western into the D&RG required a massive renumbering of equipment which began in December of 1908. The great majority of renumbering took place in 1909 and will be covered in that year.

There were no changes during the year.

1909

Denver & Rio Grande

Three new Baggage cars (682-684) were built at Burnham shops during 1909.

Most equipment was renumbered in 1909 as part of the consolidation with the Rio Grande Western. Even though there was a single uniform numbering system, both roads continued their separate rosters. The gaps in numbers in the D&RG roster are numbers assigned to Rio Grande Western equipment.

Coach & Baggage 572 (renumbered from 700 in December 1908) was wrecked on August 14, 1909.

Coach 933 (renumbered from 824 in December 1908) was "destroyed" in January 1909.

1910

Denver & Rio Grande

The D&RG placed a huge equipment order to provide equipment for the new Western Pacific. These 109 cars (88 for WP and 21 for D&RG) were all owned by the D&RG. All 109 cars were steel and served a long and useful life on the Rio Grande.

Eight dining cars were built by Barney & Smith in April. They were named California, Humboldt, Nevada, Oakland, Pacific, Sacramento, San Francisco and Stockton. All were assigned to the Western Pacific.

Pullman delivered fifty-one new Coaches. Forty were sent to the W. P. where they were numbered 301-340. Eleven cars numbered 888 to 898 remained on the D&RG. Interestingly the roster of September 1909 showed there were ten cars numbered 888 to 897 on-order, meaning that one additional order was delivered later.

Forty new Baggage cars were ordered from American Car & Foundry. Thirty went to the W. P., numbered 101-130. The ten D&RG cars were numbered 686-695.

Ten Buffet Library cars were built by Barney & Smith for use on the W. P., numbered as 801-810.

Coach 873 was rebuilt into an additional Business car named Frederick.

Denver & Rio Grande Western

The Denver & Rio Grande was reorganized effective August 1 as the Denver & Rio Grande Western. It is reasonable to assume that the Rio Grande Western equipment roster was finally integrated with the new Denver & Rio Grande Western.

Three cars were damaged in the Pueblo flood of June 3, 1921. Mail Baggage & Express car 613 was scrapped. Baggage car 684 and Coach 819 were damaged and removed from service. By 1924 these two last cars were in work car service.

Baggage car 668 was wrecked on December 21, 1921

Coach 807 was destroyed by fire on December 29, 1921.

At the end of the year Mail Baggage & Express car 606 was transferred to work car service as 0606.

Denver & Rio Grande Western

In 1922 the D&RGW leased WP Business car Nomad, which WP had purchased from Rock Island circa 1916. It was finally purchased from the WP in 1925 and numbered 100. It will be shown in the roster at that time.

Renumbering of dining cars into the 1000 series was started in 1922. Roster #11 of April 1, 1923 showed only car names. Only car names are shown in the roster below.

Coach 809 and Coach & Baggage car 576 were transferred to work car service (0576) in November.

Chair Observation car 540 was changed to a Pay car (0540) in December.

Western Pacific

There were no changes during the year.

1923

In very late 1923 and in 1924 the Western Pacific cars were returned to the D&RGW and renumbered.

In very late 1923 and during all of 1924 a major renumbering of D&RGW passenger equipment took place. These changes will all be shown in 1924.

Excursion construction car 0776 was listed in the roster of April 1, 1916, but not listed in the roster of April 1, 1923.

1924

In very late 1923 and during all of 1924 a major renumbering of passenger equipment took place. All cars formerly used on the Western Pacific were being returned to the D&RGW and received D&RGW numbers. In order to regroup all similar cars together a renumbering program for Baggage cars and Coaches was started.

All forty of the 1910 AC&F Baggage cars were renumbered in order to fit into a single sequence from 700 to 739. Cars 686-695 were renumbered 710-719, while the twenty cars returned by the Western Pacific were renumbered 720 to 739. This meant that cars 730-734 (the former Buffet-Library cars) were to be renumbered again, this time to 740 to 744.

Wood Baggage & Express cars 696 to 699 were renumbered 684-687.

The 1891-built Baggage and Fruit cars 1001 to 1010 (2nd) were renumbered 635 to 644.

Excursion construction car 0776 was listed in the roster of April 1, 1916, but not listed in the roster of April 1, 1923.

Coaches numbered from 861 to 887 were renumbered into a 834 to 859 sequence. Single car 860 escaped the renumbering.

Chair cars 950 to 970 were renumbered 861 to 881.

In order to keep all the 1910 Pullman Coaches together, the eleven cars numbered 888 to 898, and all twenty returned WP 300-series cars were renumbered into one series of 51 cars numbered 900 to 950.

The Business cars were assigned numbers in the 100-series, but none of the cars were actually renumbered until early 1925.

Coach & Baggage car 578 was destroyed by fire on May 26, 1924.

Coach 778 was transferred to work car service (0778) in October or November 1924.

Coach Mail & Baggage car 550 was sold to the Western Pacific on December 29, 1924.

Mail Baggage & Express cars 609 and 611 were rebuilt during 1924.

1925

Business car Nomad was purchased from Western Pacific in May and numbered 100. The other six Business cars, A-1 to A-6, were all renumbered to 101-106. Car B-4 was not changed.

The return of the additional steel Coaches from the Western Pacific enabled the retirement of some older wood cars. Nine Coaches (750, 774, 781, 812, 815, 818, 861, 862 and 871) were transferred to work car service during the year and one Coach (803) was destroyed by fire on the Grand Junction Division.

Open observation cars 791-793 were retired in November. They were not dismantled until early 1926.

The roster below varies from the 1925 D&RGW Annual Report by two Coaches.

Business cars were reported in the Annual Report as Work Equipment.

In May two steel Coaches (912 and 936) were rebuilt into lounge cars Granite Canon and Spanish Fork Canon respectively.

In October steel Coach 926 was rebuilt into Business car 101 (2nd).

Steel Coach 924 was retired in October and by March 1930 emerged from Burnham shops as Business car 102 (2nd). It was reported in the 1929 annual report as an addition to the Business car fleet and is so listed here.

The four cars listed above were equipped with 6-wheel trucks in a trade with Baggage cars 740- 742 and 744. The 4-wheel trucks from these cars were placed under the Baggage cars.

As a result of the two new Business cars, three of the previous Business cars were renumbered. Car 102 became 103 (2nd), car 101 became 107 and car 103 became 108.

During that period some were removed from the lease and the total was reduced to 24 in 1937-1940, 23 in 1941, and 17 in 1942. In 1943 all remaining leased Express Refrigerator cars were returend and went to new lessees, primarily Railway Express Agency.

These 25 Express Refrigerator cars, Nos. 1600 to 1624, inclusive, leased from the General American Car Company, are not included in roster.

Wood Coaches 826 and 838 were transferred to work car service in December and July respectively.

Mail Baggage & Express car 600 was transferred to work car service in December 1929.

1931-1933

On February 24, 1931 Coach 829 was renumbered work car 010076, then later in the year renumbered back into Coach 829. On September 28, 1932 it became Vocational Training Car 829. All during the 1931-1933 period this car was accounted for as a Coach in D&RGW Annual Reports, resulting in no changes to the roster.

1934

Four Dining cars (Mt. Elbert, Mt. Harvard, Mt. Princeton and Mt. Yale) were retired during the year. In June 1935 they emerged from Burnham shops as modernized Diner Lounge cars.

All seven Lounge cars (Eagle Canon, Glenwood Canon, Granite Canon, Ogden Canon, Royal Gorge, Ruby Canon and Spanish Fork Canon) were modernized with a revised interior and air conditioned (ice system) during the year.

The four "Peak" series Diners (Castle Peak, Pikes Peak, Sopris Peak and Twin Peak) were remodeled and air conditioned (ice system) during the year.

Eleven steel Coaches (901, 904, 908, 910, 911, 920, 938, 941, 942, 948, 949) were retired in April 1934, and emerged from Burnham shops in June and July 1934 as rebuilt "Parlor Coaches" numbered 960 to 970.

Five steel Coaches (900, 915, 916, 928, 940) were retired in December 1934, and emerged from Burnham shops in March and April of 1935 as Coaches 971 to 975.

Business car 105, originally Coach 825, then "H", Denver and A-5 was retired in May and became Business work outfit 010120, assigned Scale Tester.

1935

In June 1935 four former dining cars (Mt. Elbert, Mt. Harvard, Mt. Princeton and Mt. Yale) emerged from Burnham shops as modernized air conditioned (ice system) diner-lounge cars. Mt. Elbert was renamed James Peak, the other three retained their original names. The "new" cars seated 18 in the dining section and 20 in the lounge section. These cars represented a new approach to Lounge and Dining car facilities. The interior furniture was changed when required and the cars were used as Diner Lounge, full Diner or full Lounge cars as traffic levels dictated.

Steel Coaches 900, 915, 916, 928 and 940 were retired in December 1934 and emerged in March and April of 1935 as air conditioned (ice system) Parlor Coaches 971 to 975. These cars were almost identical to the cars modernized in 1934, but had a slightly different seating arrangement -- seating 57 whereas the 1934 cars seated 63.

Parlor Coaches 960 to 970 were improved when air conditioning (ice system) was installed in all eleven cars during the year.

The new CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR was taking shape. The following is from the 1945 D&RGW Annual Report:

During 1945 orders were placed for new light-weight high-speed passenger equipment, to be delivered during the latter part of 1946 or early in 1947, to fill our mileage proportion (22.5%) of six Zephyr type stainless steel trains to operate between Chicago and San Francisco in connection with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Moffat tunnel route, Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Western Pacific Railroad Companies.

Each train ,will consist of a Baggage car; three Coaches; a tourist sleeping car; a coffee shop-lounge-dormitory car; a 48-seat diner; two standard sleeping cars, with open sections, roomettes, and bedrooms; and an observation-lounge room car. Each of the Coaches, coffee shop-lounge-dormitory car, and the observation-lounge room car will be of the Vista Dome type. No Vista Domes will be built into the sleeping cars.

In allocating the ownership of the sixty cars required to fill this service, the Rio Grande will purchase one complete train, plus three of the cars making up one train, the latter three being one Vista Dome Coach, one tourist car, and one 10-section 4-bedroom standard Sleeper.

During this same period the two two-car PROSPECTOR trainsets were "sold to Budd Co. on November 13, 1945" for $300,000.

As mentioned in 1947, Dormitory Baggage car 722 had an air conditioned dormitory and shower installed in 1948. All three Dormitory Baggage cars (722, 729 and 738) were now "3 compartment Dormitory cars."

The Dinette sections from former D&SL Dinette-Coaches 955 and 957 were removed and installed in D&RGW Coaches 982 and 983, restoring them to Dinette Coaches.

Coach 829 the "Vocational Training Car" was wrecked at Granby on July 29, 1948 and retired in November.

D&SL Business car 10016 was retired during 1948.

Coach 861 was also removed from the D&RGW "Summary of Equipment" during 1948, however the car was not retired until 1950 -- so the roster below has one more car than the January 1, 1949 Summary of Equipment.

Fifteen new cars for California Zephyr service arrived from the Budd Company.

1949

Three "slightly used" dome-chair-observation cars were purchased from the Chesapeake & Ohio during the year. They carried the numbers 1875-1877 on the C&O. These cars originally had a 20-seat Coach section, 24 dome seats, a souvenir shop-snack bar beneath the dome and an observation lounge. The cars were used by C&O for a little over a year, primarily on the Pere Marquettes.

The D&RGW purchased the cars for Royal Gorge service. They were originally round-end observation cars, but the D&RGW modified them with diaphragms to operate mid-train. The Lounge seats were converted to Coach seating.

Fifteen 900-series Coaches were retired during 1949, including 906, 907, 917, 922, 927, 930, 931, 935, 947, 950, 951, 954, 955, 956, 957. All fifteen were sold to the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay Railway for $75,000.

The roster below reconciles with the 1949 Annual Report in all equipment classifications.

Coach 861 was also removed from the D&RGW "Summary of Equipment" during 1948, however the car was not retired until 1950 -- so the roster below has one more car than the January 1, 1950 Summary of Equipment.

1950

The Rio Grande realized that the older, heavyweight equipment comprising the consists of the ROYAL GORGE and PROSPECTOR, even though air-conditioned and completely modernized, presented an image inconsistent with that represented by the new, silver, streamlined, California Zephyr. Investigating possible solutions to remedy the situation, the railroad found among current construction at Pullman Standard a number of new cars ordered by the Chesapeake & Ohio, about which that road now was having second thoughts. Arrangements were successfully concluded between the C.&O., Pullman Standard, and the Rio Grande, for the latter to take over the C.&O.'s delivery positions on 25 of the streamlined cars.

2 1280,1281 Diner Lounge (Mt. Timpanogos and James Peak)
3 1290-1292 Buffet Lounge (Castle Gate, Royal Gorge and Eagle Canon)

These 25 cars, plus the three Vista Dome Coaches purchased in 1949 re-equipped both the PROSPECTOR and, except for Pullmans, the ROYAL GORGE.

Four cars built in 1910 (two Diner Lounge cars and two Lounge cars) were changed to numbers to free up the names for the new cars listed above.

Eagle Canon (built 1910) changed to No. 1300

Royal Gorge (built 1910) changed to No. 1301

James Peak (built 1910) changed to No. 1302

Mt. Timpanogos (built 1910) changed to No. 1303

Coaches 952 and 953 were retired and sold.

Wood Coach 861 was retired.

The dormitory and showers were removed from Dormitory Baggage cars 722 and 738 returning them to straight Baggage car duty. The dormitory equipment removed from 722 and 738 was installed in new cars 1230 and 1231.

The roster below reconciles with the 1950 Annual Report in all equipment classifications.

1966

There were no changes in the equipment roster during 1966.

The famous Prospector overnight train was discontinued on May 28, 1967 and the Royal Gorge followed on July 27. As a result most of the Pullman-Standard equipment acquired in 1950 was sold to Delaware & Hudson for further use.
