References -- Smelting in Utah

by Wilbur H. Smith

1978

Author's Explanation (Pages 23-29 in original document)

This system of cross-referencing was adopted to simplify the listing of smelters but may have added to the confusion of an already complex subject. However, the result has been the following, which if carefully followed, can result in helping a researcher to pursue the subject. The references are listed chronologically, as much as possible, and identified specifically as to date and source, with guide numbers listed in parentheses. Most of the referenced publications are in the author's private library.

Due to the bulk of references a simplified system of indexing was adopted. Instead of the usual formal type of listing, the simplified system is abbreviated without all the formal details, assuming that the reader is sufficiently acquainted with the literature that the entries will be instantly recognized. If not, the reader can consult my Comprehensive List of References, Bingham or West Mountain Mining District, 1977, as that list contains most of the items in this list.

Raymond's

"Raymond's" refers to "Mineral Resources West of the Rocky Mountains. Washington," published from 1867 to 1876.

Rossiter W. Raymond, Ph.D. -- The name of Dr. Raymond has long been familiar in the mining world through his work as United States Commissioner of Mineral Statistics, and through "Mineral Resources West of the Rocky Mountains," issued by the Interior Department in the early 1870s, Dr. Raymond is the author of some of the most valuable of the numerous contributions to mining literature.

Raymond's Reports. Mineral Resources West of the Rocky Mountains. Washington, 1867-1876. The first two volumes were edited by J. Ross Browne, the others by R. W. Raymond.
