Overview
(The purpose of this narrative is to tie together the timeline histories of the former Union Pacific cars that were sold to Alaska Railroad; other information is included to provide context.)
In 1971 the Alaska Railroad purchased 30 cars from Union Pacific.
All 30 cars are shown in Union Pacific's equipment record ledger book as being retired in December 1971, with no further disposition.
(Other sources show the year as 1972. This roster will use 1971 as the year of the sale.)
"The Alaska Railroad has bought a total of 32 [sic] passenger cars from the Union Pacific including 12 coaches, 4 dome coaches, 4 lunch counter cafe cars, 1 lunch counter-diner, 2 diners, 6 baggage cars and 1 postal storage car." (Ranks and Kratville, The Union Pacific Streamliners, page 526)
(The above car count from Kratville totals to 30, not 32)
