Canada Discovery Train
The Discovery Train ran during two consecutive years; first in 1978 and again in 1979. It was a cultural and geographical museum covering all of Canada, meant to promote people's knowledge of the whole country. The Discovery Train, was a traveling exhibit sponsored by the National Museum of Canada.
All of the AC&F cars were former 9100 series New York Central/Penn Central baggage cars built by American Car & Foundry in 1946. The display cars were converted for use on the AFT in Richmond, California. The showcase cars were converted for AFT service at Venice, Florida. All of the cars were sold to the National Museums of Canada for use on their Discovery Train. (America's Freedom Trains, Freedomtrain.org)
In April 1983, Union Pacific purchased the 19 cars of the Canada "Discovery Train" from the Canadian Crown Assets Disposal Corp., and assigned temporary company service numbers A201 to A219 to all cars. Fifteen of the 19 cars were former cars of the 1975-1976 "American Freedom Train" which was sold to the Canadian government in 1977.
In July 1987, UP changed the temporary numbers to permanent numbers in the 900000 series numbers. In 1990 the Union Pacific sold all but the two power cars (205 and 206) to scrap dealers.
The cars sold to Union Pacific Railroad sat on a siding in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for many years. They were eventually moved to UP's Blue Diamond spur outside Las Vegas, Nevada, where they sat for several years before being scrapped on site the week of August 15, 1995. (America's Freedom Trains, Freedomtrain.org)
Louisiana Steam Train Association at Venner, Louisiana, has a baggage car numbered as STRX 203, which is reported as being the former UP 203, and originally a Canada Discovery Train car. (Todd Schannuth, email dated August 8, 2008)
