Eric Neubauer wrote on April 25, 2012:

UP 519-523, Passenger, St. Louis Car, 1907
15 cars were ordered. So far 523, 528, 565-574, 577 are confirmed in the ICC valuation reports. The other two must have been destroyed or renumbered by then. Logically, I figure the other two could be 593, 598 or somewhere below 549. 519 ia also listed as a 72' car in Sep 1914, so I suspect this is one of them. If the missing ones were renumbered, they likely became company service since a search showed no other possible Sep or Oct 1907 built cars among the passenger or business cars. Note that these cars are attributed to St. Charles in the ledgers in error.

Notes:

  1. UP 518 (2nd) was retired before 1926; not converted to Roadway service (shown in ORER Nov 1925; not shown in ORER Jan 1926)
  2. UP 519 (2nd) was retired before 1926; not converted to Roadway service (not shown in ORER, Oct 1919)

In his Early Pullman list, Eric Neubauer refers to these as MCB type CS, which he defines as a combined smoking and baggage car sometimes equipped with buffett or bar, also called a "Club" car or a "Composite" car.

The following comes from research completed by Jeff Cauthen in June 2008:

Buffet Baggage Composite cars operated on the Overland and Golden State routes had buffets (small kitchens) and serving counters, offering light snacks and drinks. The majority of floor space in each car was devoted to the buffet and lounge areas. In some cars a barber shop and bath were included. The forward portion of each car had a baggage compartment. The cars were not specifically reserved for men, but the lounge area was finished and furnished in the manner of an English gentlemen's club devoted to conversation over drinks and cigars. Most cars had only one saloon (toilet). John H. White states that "The buffet car has been credited to G. M. Pullman; it is said that the idea came to him during a trip through Italy, where the need for a small snack such as a cup of coffee or tea, a sandwich, or some bouillon might relieve faintness between meals." As a result, in 1883, Pullman ordered a number of cars equipped with 3'-5" x 8' buffets. These cars seemed more a natural outgrowth of the hotel car, which was passing out of favor, than a new idea. Whatever its historical forerunner may be, the significance of the buffet car was that it permanently reestablished Pullman in the food trade.

The four cars discussed here (three sold to UP) were referred to by varying names during their lives: Baggage Library Composite cars, Composite cars, Buffet Baggage Composite cars, and Buffet Baggage cars. These various car types are listed as they were referred to by the railroad company and/or listed in the Official Railway Equipment Register.

Four 66-foot Baggage Library Composite cars were built for Pullman general service in 1887 and initially were assigned to service on the Pennsylvania Railroad. As delivered, they had open platforms at the baggage compartment end and narrow vestibules at the opposite end.

Madrona was renamed Golden Gate in December 1888. It was relettered for and then assigned to the Overland Route Golden Gate Special, running between Council Bluffs and Oakland.

Alfarata was renamed El Capitan in January 1889 and photographic evidence indicates that it also was assigned to the Golden Gate Special.

At an unknown date the forward open platforms of both Madrona and Alfarata were removed and the narrow rear vestibules were replaced with full-width vestibules.

Both Golden Gate (ex Madrona) and El Capitan (ex Alfarata) were later assigned to and used in the Sunset Limited during its first season, November 1, 1894 through April 11, 1895. El Capitan as of 1897 was re lettered for assignment to the Florida Limited.

The four cars remained in Pullman general service until three of them, Aztlan, El Capitan (ex Alfarata), and Esperanza, were sold to Union Pacific in October 1899. Shortly thereafter the car names were removed and replaced with UP numbers. They were then most likely assigned to Overland Route service by UP.

Pullman established an elaborate system of line (or route) numbers. This system kept track of hundreds of cars on the myriad routes (or lines) on which the sleeper cars traveled. The car line was a number given to a car type traveling between two points on a certain train, route, or region.

The Pullman Company operated Buffet Baggage Composite cars on at least two lines over the Union Pacific at the turn of the 20th century. One line operated from Chicago to Oakland over the C&NW, UP, and SP. It is thought this line was operated in the Overland Limited. The operation of this line was terminated April 10, 1902 - not long after all Pullman dining car lines on the UP were terminated March 31, 1902. One further line was operated between Portland and Granger, Wyoming - it was discontinued March 31, 1902.

UP designated their Baggage Library cars as "Composite" cars in the Official Railway Equipment Registers. In this case, "Composite" designated a car having baggage space, buffet, barber shop, and lounge facilities.

Renumbering dates in Ralph L. Barger's Union Pacific Business Cars 1870-1991, may be in error. Both the 1900 and 1905 ORER show composite cars UP 700-714; the 1915 ORER shows parlor cars UP 853-854 and composite car UP 1499; the 1919 ORER shows composite car UP 2740 and parlor cars UP 400-401.
