General Notes:

  1. Total of 86 units renumbered from UP 2400-2539 series to UP 400-531 series.
  2. UP 400-414 built as UP 2960-2974; renumbered to UP 2400-2414 in May in June, and July 1978.
  3. UP 415-531 built as UP 2415-2538; last two digits differ due to retirement of eight units (UP 2425, 2432, 2459, 2475, 2484, 2509, 2536, 2539) prior to renumbering from 2400 series to 400 series.
  4. UP 402, as UP B2402, operated in trailing unit-only status (by removal of cab signals, refrigerator, toilet, and cab seats) from 26 February 1992 until renumbered to 402 on 19 November 1996.
  5. UP 400-531 group renumbered from UP 2400-2539 group beginning in October 1996 (UP 445, former UP 2447, was the first, completed on 28 October 1996) to avoid conflict with GP38-3 units in UP 2400/2500 series leased from Helm Financial Corp.
  6. UP 532, 534, and 537 (all three units already retired) were renumbered from UP 2532, 2534, and 2537 to clear their 2500 series numbers for use by newly delivered GP38-2s; their previously assigned 500 series numbers (526, 528, and 530) are blank and not used.
  7. Assigned UP 400-531 in October 1996, 86 units renumbered; assigned UP 7874-7941 in December 1999, four units renumbered; remaining 82 units all retired by 2001.
  8. During the last week of November 1999, and the first week of December, 29 former UP C30-7s previously retired by UP and sold on 15 April 1999 to Boise Locomotive Co., at Boise, Idaho, moved over UP rails from Boise to North Platte, Nebraska, and on to Laredo, Texas. The units were interchanged to TFM and moved into Mexico over the following two weeks. The units involved were UP 401, 403, 404, 406, 413, 416, 424, 425, 448, 461, 469, 478, 479, 500, 507, 513, 529, 532, 2427, 2437, 2445, 2453, 2455, 2456, 2462, 2466, 2468, 2492, and 2498, and all were shown in UP's computer as being placed at the MPI de Mexico shop at San Luis Potosi by 18 December 1999. One report was that BLC had sold them to its affiliate MPI de Mexico, and that MPI de M will rebuild them for use by one of the Mexican roads.

Notes:

  1. UP 401, 403, 404, 406, 416, 419, 425, 439, 461, 478, 479, 497, 500, 503, 505, 507, 513, 516, and 529 (19 units) were sold to Boise Locomotive Co., Boise, Idaho, on 30 September 1999.
  2. UP 413, 424, 448, 466, 469, 532, 534, and 537 (eight units) were sold to Boise Locomotive Co., Boise, Idaho, on 15 April 1999.
  3. UP 423 was retired on 26 September 2000, then renumbered to UP 7883 on 5 October 2000 to clear the 423 number for use by renumbered GP38-2 1923.
  4. UP 477 was wrecked on 17 November 1999 at Carnes, Iowa; scrapped at wreck site.
  5. UP 495 was retired on 12 October 2000 but was still on property and was renumbered to UP 7921 on 19 November 2001 to clear the UP 495 number for use by renumbered SP GP38-2 4869.
  6. UP 502 was retired on 31 May 1999 but still on property and was renumbered to WP 502 on 16 November 2000 to clear the UP 502 number for use by renumbered GP38-2 2002.
  7. UP 509 was retired on 21 November 2000 but was still on property and was renumbered to WP 509 on 7 January 2002 to clear the UP 509 number for use by renumbered GP38-2 2009.
  8. UP 510 was retired on 18 April 2000, then renumbered to UP 7928 on 23 June 2000 to clear the UP 510 number for use by renumbered GP38-2 2010.
  9. UP 523 was retired on 18 April 2000, then renumbered to UP 7937 on 31 May 2000 to clear the UP 523 number for use by renumbered GP38-2 2023.

General Notes:

  1. UP 500-540 rebuilt by EMD at La Grange, Illinois, from UP 1500 and 1550 class F3As, originally built in 1947 and 1948.
  2. UP 503, 507, 517, 518, 527, 539 equipped with full pilot snowplow.
  3. UP 516 was wrecked in 1962 and sent to EMD as a direct trade-in for GP30 735. UP records and EMD records show F9A 516 as having been "rebuilt" to GP30 735.
  4. Fourteen units were traded to EMD in 1966 for SD40s and seven units were traded to EMD in 1968 for SD45s.
  5. Nineteen units were sold to CRI&P in 1972 in trade for a like number of former CRI&P units that UP sent to EMD as trade-in for its 1972 order of SD40-2s.

General Notes:

  1. UP 500B-542B rebuilt by EMD at La Grange, Illinois, from UP 1500 and 1550 class F3Bs, originally built in 1947 and 1948.
  2. Twenty-one units were traded to EMD in 1966 for SD40s, nine units were traded to EMD in 1968 for SD45s, and one unit (527B) was traded to EMD on the 1970 order for DDA40Xs.
  3. Twelve units were sold to CRI&P in 1972 in trade for a like number of former CRI&P units that UP sent to EMD as trade-in for its 1972 order of SD40-2s.
