Very few of the former Rock Island were actually used in regular service. Although 13 units were repainted to UP, they were stored almost immediately. All 20 units were retired by mid 1982.

General Notes:

  1. Built as CRI&P 262-281; owned by UP but leased to CRI&P.
  2. All 20 units were returned to UP upon CRI&P shut-down on 31 March 1980.
  3. Thirteen of the 20 units were found to be serviceable upon their return to UP in April 1980, and were repainted UP yellow and gray in April and May 1980, and renumbered to their UP 500 series road numbers. They were reported as operating between North Platte and Omaha, Nebraska (except UP 508, ex CRI&P 270, which was renumbered only). Other units operated briefly with their new UP numbers prior to receiving complete UP paint -- 503, 506, 514 and 518 are examples.
  4. Seven units were not renumbered to their planned UP numbers.
  5. Five units were found to be unserviceable, and were set aside immediately.
  6. All former CRI&P U28Bs (along with the former CRI&P GP40s) were stored at North Platte, Nebraska (12 units), and Council Bluffs, Iowa (eight units), due to a downturn in traffic and the continued 1980 delivery of new EMD SD40-2s and GE C30-7s; eleven units were later moved for storage to Yermo, California.
  7. Not equipped with dynamic braking.

Notes:

  1. Fifteen units were sold to Bargains Galore, Vancouver, Washington, in October 1982; scrapped by Joseph Simon & Sons, Tacoma, Washington.
  2. CRI&P 263 and 275 (assigned UP 501 and 513) were sold for scrap to Erman Corp., Turner, Kansas, 17 June 1981.
  3. CRI&P 266 (assigned UP 504) was sold for scrap to Naporano Iron & Metal, Newark, New Jersey, 29 June 1981.
  4. UP 508 (ex CRI&P 270) was sold to Precision National Corp., Mount Vernon, Illinois, 15 June 1981.
  5. CRI&P 271 (assigned UP 509) received wreck damage (damaged cab) prior to its return to UP; scrapped by UP at Omaha, Nebraska, during June 1981.
