General Notes:

  1. Total of 61 units to UP, numbered UP 1910-1970; leased from Locomotive Leasing Partners beginning in May 1997.
  2. Delivered to UP in May 1997; repainted to Union Pacific in May 1997 through April 1998 (UP 1930, ex EMD 777, and UP 1951, ex EMD 815, were the first, both completed on 4 May 1997, and UP 1952, ex EMD 817, was the last, completed on 9 April 1998).
  3. Built as part of a 100-unit group for Penn Central; to Conrail in 1976; all 100 units (CR 7940-8039) were returned on demand to lessor/owner EMD on 15 July 1987; used by EMD as part of national lease fleet; renumbered to EMD 700 and 800 series numbers by dropping second digit (either 9 or 0) of PC/CR road number, i.e. CR 7940 became EMD 740, and CR 8035 became EMD 835.
  4. A total of 53 units were renumbered to the 410-series numbers in 2000-2002; eight units remained in the 1910-series numbers at the time of retirement in 2003.
  5. All 61 units, including 8 units (UP 1934, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1950, 1964, 1965, and 1970) still in their 1910-series numbers, were retired in February 2003 due to expiration of operating lease from Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX); some individual units had their leases extended in 30-day intervals.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 28 units in service on UP; one unit (HLLX 2608) was returned by UP to Helm for repairs removed from the lease (HLLX 2608, ex CSX 2608, assigned SP number 4872, was sold by Helm to Mexicana de Cobre (Mexican Copper Co.) in late October 1996 and renumbered F11-14). UP 498 (ex SP 4873) is a GP38AC.
  2. Total of 29 SP/Helm lease units went to UP at merger, numbered (and assigned numbers) SP 4845-4873; leased from Helm Financial; originally assigned UP 1971-1999.
  3. Built as part of a 30-unit group for L&N; to Seaboard System (SBD) units; to CSX Transportation units (CSX 2580-2608); all 30 units were returned by CSX Transportation to owner/lessor on 1 April 1993; sold to Helm Financial (HLLX) and used in national lease fleet; one unit (ex CSX 2596) went to Magma Arizona as that road's number 5A.
  4. Total of 29 units were first leased by Helm to SP on a short-term lease in May and June 1993, with HLLX reporting marks and still in L&N/SBD/CSX paint; the short-term lease was changed to a long-term lease in August 1993, with all 29 units to be reconditioned for Helm by AMF Transport, Montreal, Que.; in November 1993 through December 1994, 10 units were completed; SP 166 (CSX/HLLX 2597) was the first, completed on 16 November 1993, and SP 167 (CSX/HLLX 2598) was the last, completed on 15 December 1994; subsequent units were completed in SP's 4845 series, clearing the 150 series for SP's new GE AC4400s (now known by UP as C44ACs), delivered to SP as SP 100-378 in April through October 1995; first unit in the SP 4845 series was SP 4871 (CSX/HLLX 2607), completed on 24 February 1995; the ten 150-series units were renumbered to their corresponding 4845 series numbers in January through March 1995 (SP 4848, ex SP 153, was the last unit completed, on 30 March 1995); many of the units painted in full SP gray also had a modified version of the standard SP scarlet wings in that the scarlet area was solid rather than separated by the small gray stripes within the wing area; AMF Transport completed just 16 of the 27 units as SP units, to SP 4849, completed on 16 February 1996; the subsequent 10 units were completed by Metro East Industries of East St. Louis, Illinois
  5. Some units were operated on SP until the UP merger with their Helm (HLLX) numbers, and were repainted direct from their Helm numbers to their UP numbers, skipping their assigned SP numbers.
  6. SP 4864 (assigned UP 490) and SP 4873 (renumbered to UP 498), and possibly others, were painted in Helm's blue and maroon lease fleet paint scheme, with SP initials on the hood side.
  7. Assigned UP 1971-1998 in September 1997, 10 units renumbered; assigned UP 471-498 in December 1999.

2. SP 4846 (assigned UP 1972) was retired by UP on 27 December 2001 and replaced in the operating lease by HLCX 3878 on 29 November 2001; HLCX 3878 was not assigned a UP number.
3. UP 476, 480, 485, 486, 488, 490, 495 (seven numbers) are blank and not used; seven units (SP 4850, 4854, 4859, 4860, 4862, 4864, 4869) were retired and returned to owner/lessor prior to being renumbered to 471 series numbers.
4. UP 481 was the first unit in this group to be repainted to the UP 471-498 group, completed on 5 October 2000.
5. UP 482 number is blank and not used; UP 1982 was renumbered to UP 283 on 21 April 2004.
6. UP 491, 494, 496 were renumbered to their assigned UP numbers after their October 2003 end-of-lease retirement. Almost three years after being returned to Helm in October 2003, UP 1996 while located in storage off UP property, was renumbered to UP 496 on 9 July 2006 to clear the UP 1996 number in UP's computer for use by a new SD70ACe, painted in the SP Heritage paint scheme. UP 1993 was renumbered to UP 491 at Metro East Industries on 27 November 2006.
7. UP 493 was renumbered from UP 1990 (ex SP 4865) on 17 July 2001; SP 4865 was renumbered in error to UP 1990 on the previous day, 16 July 2001, and the error was corrected the next day.
8. SP 4871 (assigned UP 497) was retired on 27 December 2001 and replaced in the operating lease by HLCX 3876 on 2 January 2002; HLCX 3876 was not assigned a UP number.
9. UP 498 (ex SP 4873) was order number is 7305-18. (information from Ken Ardinger via email, 16 November 2002)

General Notes:

  1. Original total of 60 units; UP 2026 retired prior to the December 1999 renumber plan; total of 59 units renumbered to UP 500-559, leaving UP 525 blank.
  2. Equipped with cab signals and Automatic Cab Signal equipment at each end for either-end-leading operation along Union Pacific's lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River.
  3. UP's GP38-2s in the 2000-2059 series were generally assigned to the Pacific Northwest region until about 1987. At that time, a group of about 20 to 25 units, from UP 2000 to UP 2020 or 2025 were transferred east to the Nebraska Division to provide local switching power that required CCS cab signals for mainline running (replacing retired GP30s). The rest of the GP38-2s, numbered to UP 2059 (and now as UP 559), remain in the Pacific Northwest through 2006. (information from Chris Faulk via email, October 8, 2006)
  4. All 60 units were delivered with the "We Can Handle It" lettering scheme in 1974 and 1975. When UP changed lettering schemes in late 1975 to the 20-inch long hood lettering and medallion under the cab, very few GP38-2s received this new lettering scheme. (UP 2050 did receive the new lettering scheme, along with about ten others in the higher series numbers). After UP changed lettering schemes again in 1980 by moving the medallion to the nose, most of the remaining GP38-2s were repainted into this later lettering scheme during the early 1980s. A few of the 60 units escaped the lettering changes well into the 1990s, including UP 2000 and 2001, which remained in the "We Can handle It" scheme into the mid 1990s.   5. Renumbered from UP 2000-2059.
