  1. UP 1000 was built as Electro Motive Corp. NW2 demonstrator 889; built for demonstration service on UP; sold to UP March 1940. (During the same time period in October 1939 to March 1940, UP also tested EMC's SW1 demonstrator 911. After returning to EMC, the SW1 was sold to Great Lakes Steel in November 1940.)
  2. Built under EMC order number E308 (shared with UP 1001-1009).

Notes:

  1. UP 1000 was sold to Stockton Terminal & Eastern Railroad 1000, Stockton, California, in July 1966; sold to WP in October 1968, rebuilt and placed in service as WP 607 in June 1969; sold to Sacramento Northern 607 in May 1973; assigned UP 1886 after December 1982 UP/WP merger but never carried that number; retired, again in September 1983; donated in May 1984 to tourist operation Deer Creek Scenic Railway, contract operator of the State of Utah-owned former D&RGW Heber Provo Canyon Branch (usually known as the Heber Creeper), delivered in early August 1984, repainted back to original UP black switcher paint scheme, locomotive removed from service in 1986; private operation of Heber Creeper shut down in January 1991; sold to Nevada State Railroad Museum in 1992, moved to Boulder, Nevada, in February 1993; repainted and relettered to Boulder City Southern; relettered to Nevada Southern.

General Notes:

  1. UP 1025-1035 were part of an order for 25 units, to be numbered UP 1025-1049; only 11 units were delivered; remainder of order (UP 1036-1049, 14 units) was canceled by the War Production Board in July 1942. UP numbers 1036-1049 were later used on additional NW2s.
  2. UP 1036-1054 were the second units to carry these numbers; the same numbers were first carried by Alco S-2s, 1036-1054, which were renumbered to the 1100-series in 1945.
  3. UP 1055-1060 were the second group of units to carry these numbers; the same numbers were first carried by Baldwin VO-1000s, which were renumbered to the 1200-series in 1945.
  4. UP 1001-1075 were delivered in UP's early black switcher paint scheme, repainted to yellow in late 1947.
  5. UP 1006-1011, 1016, 1018-1021, 1027-1029, 1039, 1040, 1046-1049, 1052-1054, 1056-1058, 1060-1063, 1070, 1081, and 1085 (33 units) were assigned to the South-Central District (Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles) during early 1953. During February and March 1953 each unit had the D.S. (Diesel Switch) prefix removed from its 1000-series number.
  6. UP 1088-1095 had 253,000 pounds operating weight and 65:12 gear ratio; several were later changed to 62:15 gear ratio.
  7. UP 1001-1009 were built under EMC order number E308 (shared with 1000).
  8. UP 1010-1014 were built on EMD order number E328; delivered in UP's black switcher paint scheme.
  9. UP 1015-1024 were built on EMD order number E371; delivered in UP's black switcher paint scheme.
  10. UP 1025-1035 were built on EMD order number E476; delivered in UP's black switcher paint scheme.
  11. UP 1036-1050 were built on EMD order number E683; delivered in UP's black switcher paint scheme.
  12. UP 1051-1075 were built on EMD order number E820.
  13. UP 1076-1095 were built on EMD order number E998.

  8. UP 1008 was sold to Precision National Corp., Mount Vernon, Illinois, in March 1978.

General Notes:

  1. UP 1036-1054 were ordered and delivered to UP in lieu of additional EMD NW2 switchers. UP had ordered 25 NW2s in August 1941. On 7 July 1942, after 11 of the 25 units were delivered, the remaining 14 units were canceled by the War Production Board. UP's requirement for additional yard switchers was filled a year later with these 19 Alco S-2s.
  2. UP 1036-1054 delivered in UP's black switcher paint scheme, repainted to yellow in late 1947, after being renumbered to the 1100-series.
  3. UP 1036-1039 had Alco order number S-1883.
  4. UP 1040-1048 had Alco order number S-1914.
  5. UP 1049-1054 had Alco order number S-1930.
