General Notes:

  1. Total of 40 SP units went to UP at merger; 39 units remained to be renumbered to the UP 1800-1839 group.
  2. Built as B39-8; model designation changed by UP from B39-8 to B40-8 on 29 January 1999; differences between the B39-8s and B40-8s was in the control software, having two model designations became unnecessary when all 39 B39-8s and all 51 B40-8s were upgraded to the same software.
  3. Five units repainted to Union Pacific since the December 1999 renumber plan was adopted; two units (UP 1815 and 1829) were renumbered to their assigned UP 1800 series numbers; three units (UP 5626, 5639, and 5644) were repainted to their previous UP 5600 series numbers due to conflicts with existing GP38-2s in the 1800 series.
  4. Assigned UP 5609-5648 in September 1997, 36 units renumbered; assigned UP 1800-1839 in December 1999.

Notes:

  1. UP 1800 was wrecked on 24 November 2005 (Thanksgiving Day) at Momence, Illinois; scrapped at wreck site; for recordkeeping purposes in UP's computer system, the UP 1800 number was changed to WP 1800 on 15 December 2005.
  2. UP 1804 is blank and not used; SP 8004 was wrecked on 25 October 1997 at West Junction (Houston), Texas, scrapped at wreck site; formally retired on 4 December 1997.
  3. UP 1814 renumbered direct from SP 8013 (assigned UP 5622) on 4 September 2003.

  2. Total of 28 units in service on UP; one unit (HLLX 2608) was returned by UP to Helm for repairs removed from the lease (HLLX 2608, ex CSX 2608, assigned SP number 4872, was sold by Helm to Mexicana de Cobre (Mexican Copper Co.) in late October 1996 and renumbered F11-14).
  3. Total of 29 SP/Helm lease units went to UP at merger, numbered (and assigned numbers) SP 4845-4873; leased from Helm Financial; originally assigned UP 1971-1999.
  4. Total of 30 units built as L&N units; to Seaboard System (SBD) units; to CSX Transportation units (CSX 2580-2608); all 30 units returned by CSX Transportation to owner/lessor on 1 April 1993; sold to Helm Financial (HLLX) and used in national lease fleet; Helm sold ex CSX 2596 to Magma Arizona 5A.
  5. Total of 29 units were first leased by Helm to SP on short-term lease in May and June 1993, with HLLX reporting marks, still in L&N/SBD/CSX paint; short-term lease changed to long-term lease in August 1993, with all 29 units to be reconditioned for Helm by AMF Transport, Montreal, Que.; in November 1993 through December 1994, 10 units were completed in the SP 150 series (SP 166, ex CSX/HLLX 2597, was the first to be completed, on 16 November 1993; SP 167, ex CSX/HLLX 2598, was the last, completed on 15 December 1994); subsequent units were completed in SP's 4845 series, clearing the 150 series for SP's new GE AC4400s (now known by UP as C44ACs), delivered to SP as SP 100-378 in April through October 1995; first unit in the SP 4845 series was SP 4871 (ex CSX/HLLX 2607), completed on 24 February 1995; the 10 150 series units were renumbered to their corresponding 4845 series numbers in January through March 1995 (SP 4848, ex SP 153, was the last unit completed, on 30 March 1995); many of the units painted in full SP gray also had a modified version of the standard SP scarlet wings in that the scarlet area was solid rather than separated by the small gray stripes within the wing area; AMF Transport completed just 16 of the 27 units as SP units, to SP 4849, completed on 16 February 1996; the subsequent 10 units were completed by Metro East Industries of East St. Louis, Illinois
  6. Some units were operated on SP until the UP merger with their Helm (HLLX) numbers, and were repainted direct from their Helm numbers to their UP numbers, skipping their assigned SP numbers.
  7. Assigned UP 1971-1998 in September 1997, 10 units renumbered; assigned UP 471-498 in December 1999.

General Notes:

  1. All six units are painted in special paint schemes, with newly designed paint schemes that are meant to commemorate the heritage of UP's predecessor companies.
  2. All six units were delivered by EMD to UP in gray primer, and operated systemwide for a brief time period until they were moved to Wisconsin & Southern's paint shop at Horicon, Wisconsin, for application of the special paint schemes.
  3. All six SD70ACe heritage locomotives, along with UP SD70ACe 8444 in standard UP yellow and gray, were gathered for a special photo on June 30, 2007 at Salt Lake City, Utah. The photo was published in the October 2007 issue of Trains magazine.

Notes:

  1. For UP 1982, MP was controlled by UP on January 1, 1983; MP, along with all of its subsidiaries (including MKT by that time) was formally merged into UP on January 1, 1998; UP 1982 was unveiled (along with UP 1983) at a special heritage ceremony at Omaha, Nebraska, on July 30, 2005.
  2. For UP 1983, WP was controlled by UP on January 1, 1983; Western Pacific Railroad was formally merged into Union Pacific on June 17, 1987 (on June 15, 1987, Western Pacific's two subsidiaries, Tidewater Southern and Sacramento Northern , were merged into WP); UP 1983 was unveiled (along with UP 1982) at a special heritage ceremony at Omaha, Nebraska, on July 30, 2005.
  3. For UP 1988, MKT was controlled by UP on August 12, 1988; MKT was formally merged into MP on December 1, 1989; UP 1988 was released in early August 2005, and moved to Chicago, where it entered revenue service on August 4, 2005 on a train to East St. Louis, Illinois
  4. For UP 1989, SP was controlled by D&RGW's parent company (Rio Grande Industries) on October 13, 1988; Rio Grande Industries changed its name to Southern Pacific Rail Corp. on May 14, 1993, and was itself controlled by UP on September 11, 1996, then formally merged into UP on February 1, 1998; UP 1989 was unveiled at a special heritage ceremony at Denver, Colorado, on June 17, 2006, and entered revenue service that night, on a train to Pueblo, Colorado.
  5. The builder decal for UP 1989 (as UP 8521, 1st) actually reads as 20056729-098, built 05-2006. Although this could mean that the group was split into separate builder lots, the variation more likely indicates a simple typographical error when the decal was being produced. (data from photo of decal at time of delivery, courtesy of Ken Larson via email on November 23, 2013)
  6. For UP 1995, C&NW was controlled by UP on April 25, 1995; C&NW was formally merged into UP on June 26, 1995; on August 1, 1995, UP merged with Western Railroad Properties (WRPI), a C&NW subsidiary organized to build its line into the Wyoming Powder River Basin; UP 1995 was unveiled at a special heritage ceremony at Chicago on July 15, 2006 and entered revenue service that night on a train to Council Bluffs, Iowa.
  7. For UP 1996, SP was controlled by UP on September 11, 1996; SP's subsidiaries D&RGW and SPCSL were formally merged into UP on June 1, 1997; SP subsidiary SSW was formally merged into UP on September 1, 1997; SP itself was formally merged into UP on February 1, 1998 (actually, UP was merged into SP, and SP changed it name to UP on the same day); UP 1996 was unveiled at a special heritage ceremony at Roseville, California, on August 19, 2006; entered revenue service on August 24, 2006 (following some minor warranty repairs) on a train to Eugene, Oregon.
