General Notes:

  1. UP 2900-2909 were Union Pacific's last locomotives purchased from Alco Products, the successor to the American Locomotive Company (Alco). They were purchased in 1966 as part of a comparison between the EMD SD40, the GE U28C, and the Alco C630, all three of which were the most recent models for road freight locomotives on America's railroads. The reliability and maintainability of the EMD SD40 won out and the C630s remained as orphans until their retirement just six years later.
  2. DM&IR purchased ten Alco C630s from UP in 1973 while the DM&IR awaited delivery of new SD38-2s from EMD. DM&IR received five SD38-2s in March 1975, numbered as DM&IR 209-213. Three of the C630s (DM&IR 905, 906, 908) went to U.S. Steel's Cartier Railway in 1974 (owned by Quebec Cartier Mining), and the remaining seven were transferred to Cartier Railway in 1976. On DM&IR, the ex UP C630s were only intended to be temporary placeholders until EMD could manufacture the SD38-2s. ("Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway in Color" by David C. Schauer, Page 86)
  3. UP 2901 was previously published as becoming Cartier Railway 34; a check of the electrical cabinet (electrical locker) frame by Ed Bowers shows the number 3440 8, meaning that Cartier Railway (QCM) 34 was originally UP 2907/DM&IR 907. Other UP/DM&IR to QCM numbers may also be mixed up.
  4. UP 2900-2909 had Alco order number 1252 (3440-01 through 3440-09).

Notes:

  1. UP 2900 was sold to DM&IR 900, 24 November 1973; sold to Cartier Railway 33 in April 1976; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  2. UP 2901 was sold to DM&IR 901, 24 November 1973; sold to Cartier Railway 38 in April 1976; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  3. UP 2902 was sold to DM&IR 902, 24 November 1973; sold to Cartier Railway 35 in April 1976; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  4. UP 2903 was sold to DM&IR 903, 24 November 1973; sold to Cartier Railway 36 in April 1976; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  5. UP 2904 was sold to DM&IR 904, 24 November 1973; sold to Cartier Railway 37 in April 1976; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  6. UP 2905 was sold to DM&IR 905, 7 February 1974; sold to Cartier Railway 30 in April 1974; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  7. UP 2906 was sold to DM&IR 906, 7 February 1974; sold to Cartier Railway 31 in April 1974; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  8. UP 2907 was sold to DM&IR 907, 7 February 1974; sold to Cartier Railway 34 in April 1976; sold to Vintage Locomotives, Inc. (Ed Bowers) in June 2003 (bill of sale dated 9 July 2003); shipped to Houston in December 2004 (loaded at Port Cartier on December 13, unloaded at Houston on December 23); moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, for loan and storage at Arkansas Railroad Museum.
  9. UP 2908 was sold to DM&IR 908, 7 February 1974; sold to Cartier Railway 32 in April 1974; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.
  10. UP 2909 was sold to DM&IR 909, 7 February 1974; sold to Cartier Railway 39 in April 1976; scrapped by Cartier in 1990.

General Notes:

  1. Immediately upon delivery in April to July 1975, UP 2905- 2919 (15 units) were stored at Council Bluffs due to a business slowdown; part of a group of 52 new units (along with GP38-2s 2040-2059 and SD40-2s 3288-3304) that were given acceptance runs between Omaha and North Platte, then placed into storage to avoid having to pay on their equipment trusts, which wouldn't be activated until the units actually entered service; the new units were all in service by March 1976.
  2. UP 2915-2919 were delivered new from GE equipped with 7FCL-16A1 engines, which had their 16 cylinder diesel engines configured with 14 power cylinders and two cylinders functioning as air compressors, a practice common in stationary power plants. All five units had their engines replaced with standard 7FDL-16E18 16-cylinder engines during 1977 and 1978.
  3. UP 2955 was the last U30C on UP, retired on 19 September 1989.
