General Notes:

  1. UP 3174 was the first unit completely rebuilt (completed on 21 December 1990) and recapitalized in what Union Pacific calls its Life Extension program for SD40-2s; it was renumbered to UP 7050 at the same time, fitting into a planned 7000 series for the rebuilt units. UP 7050 was renumbered back to UP 3174 on 10 January 1991 with the decision not to give the rebuilt units a new number series, but rather a new model designation, SD40-2R.
  2. (Read more about the SD40-2R Life Extension program)
  3. UP 3200-3209 (10 units) are equipped with cab signals and Automatic Cab Signal equipment at each end for either-end-leading operation along Union Pacific's lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River.
  4. Fitted with 81-inch nose and grid-style radiator screens.
