General Notes:
- UP 3410-3414 (along with UP 3396-3399, a total of nine units) were equipped during February 1978 for leading-position on pool trains with Canadian Pacific through Eastport, Idaho; the modifications (completed at Salt Lake City, Utah) included installation of Canadian-style ditch lights.
- Initial per unit cost for UP 3410-3438, according to Equipment Trust No. 1 of 1978, dated September 1, 1977, was $609,425, with a total cost of $17,673,325 for all 29 units.
- Initial per unit cost for UP 3439-3488, according to Equipment Trust No. 2 of 1978, dated October 1, 1977, was $609,425, with a total cost of $30,471,250 for all 50 units.
- Fitted with Phase II 116-inch nose and corrugated-style radiator screens.

- UP 3414 was retired and renumbered to UP 7886 (Peak Power) on 7 November 2003.

General Notes:
- UP 3584-3608 were built as high-speed, 80 mph SD40-2Ms 8075-8099; high-speed modifications removed and units renumbered to UP 3584-3608 in November 1980 through November 1981.
- Fitted with 88-inch nose and corrugated radiator screens.
Notes:
- UP 3575 operated in trailing-unit-only status (by removal of cab signals, refrigerator, toilet, and cab seats) as UP B3575 from 28 April 1992 until 5 May 1995.
- UP 3579 had a long hood from a C&NW SD40-2 6922, because of damage to the UP unit's long hood while in service on the C&NW. C&NW chose to swap long hoods with its own SD40-2 6922 (in shop for scheduled maintenance), and deliver UP 3579 to UP on June 19, 1987, with C&NW paint intact on long hood, with new UP number spray-painted on hood side. Forwarded direct to North Little Rock for painting in early September 1987. C&NW repaired the damage to the UP long hood and used it to return C&NW 6922 to service.
- UP 3593 was painted in late February 1991 with a U. S. Army-inspired camouflage paint scheme, named Desert Victory, to commemorate the 66 UP employees who participated in Operation Desert Storm; repainted back to standard UP yellow and gray on October 11, 1991. (UP 3593 was retired in January 2003; sold in 2004 to Iowa, Chicago & Eastern (ICE) 6426; sold in June 2014 to Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad (RCPE) 6426, renumbered to RCPE 3422.)

General Notes:
- UP 3805-3808 were built as test units and were equipped with a improved engines and turbochargers, longer radiators, two-speed radiator fans, as a test for EMD to increase cooling capacity for its SD40-2 model. At the conclusion of the one-year test, all four units were equipped with standard engines and standard turbochargers.
- The carbodies are longer than a standard SD40-2 by approximately 28 inches to accommodate longer radiators; each long-hood is fitted with eight doors under radiator section, rather than seven, and a shorter rear platform.
- Previously reported as being equipped with improved wheel-slip control (a feature of the later Super Series units). Research in the railroad's mechanical department records completed during 2000 found that these units were not equipped with the Super Series improved wheel slip control features. - Fitted with 88-inch nose and corrugated radiator screens.
Notes:
- Unretired UP 3806 and 3807 were renumbered to the new 3100-3522 series to clear this 3800 series for use by new SD70M units, numbered from 3779.
