General Notes:

  1. Built as MP 700-719 (purchased by MP for service between St. Louis and Pueblo, Colorado.); renumbered to MP 3000-3019 in 1978.
  2. Of the above 20 units, six were repainted to UP yellow and gray - four with MP lettering and two with UP lettering.
  3. All 20 units (along with MP 3020-3033) were assigned to switch service in July 1985; redesignated by UP as SD40Ys.
  4. In June through September 1989, the nine remaining units (MP 3002, 3005, 3007, 3008, 3010, 3012, 3017, 3018, 3019) were retired. In July 1989 all nine units were formally reassigned from switch service back to freight service in preparation for lease to Mexico; in September and November 1989 all nine units were reinstated and leased to NdeM for service in Mexico; all units were retired as they returned from lease to NdeM.   1. Original total of 73 D&RGW units; 69 units went to UP at merger; SP retired four units (D&RGW 5348, 5370, 5402, and 5408) prior to the merger.
  2. Of the 69 units to UP at merger, 15 units (D&RGW 5350, 5351, 5352, 5362, 5366, 5368, 5378, 5380, 5387, 5388, 5393, 5394, 5397, 5399, and 5412) had been repainted to SP.
  3. Total of 69 D&RGW units assigned UP 4000-4068 in September 1997, 22 units renumbered; changed to the UP 8570-8638 in December 1999; assigned numbers in UP 2866-2949 group in August 2000, along with 62 refurbished former SP/SSW units; 10 units renumbered to the UP 9863-9873 series in 2007, less than a year before being retired in 2008.
