General Notes:

  1. Total of 60 units; purchased by MP in late 1984, after the December 1982 merger with UP; delivered new as MP units with yellow and gray paint and Missouri Pacific lettering as the first new units of the merged UP and MP.
  2. All 60 former MP SD50s were relettered from MP to UP by September 1990; the first, UP 5029, was completed on 12 December 1988; the last was 5052, completed on 17 September 1990.
  3. In March 1990, UP 5000 was equipped with a test application of the Westinghouse (WABCO) Epic 3131 Electronic Braking components, testing the components that were planned to be incorporated in the electronic control units from both EMD and GE; many design features tested on UP 5000 have been incorporated in an EMD SD60M electronic control test unit, UP 6268, and a GE C40-8 electronic control test unit, UP 9480; after a six-month test, all 60 units in the 5000-5059 were equipped with Westinghouse E3101 electronic braking systems.
  4. Beginning in mid-1994, former MP SD50s were rebuilt to what UP calls SD50Ms, reducing their horsepower from 3600 to 3500 and improving their cooling system, including installation of eight-blade cooling fans; the first unit to be converted was 5016, completed on 6 June 1994.
  5. Equipped with cab signals and Automatic Cab Signal equipment for operation along Union Pacific's lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River.
  6. Assigned UP 9880-9939 in December 1999; assigned back to UP 5000-5059 in January 2000 (UP 5001 renumbered to UP 9881); most units retired in June 2000 to December 2001, remaining 10 units assigned UP 9835-9844 in May 2002 to clear the 5000 series for use by new SD70Ms.

Notes:

  1. UP 5001 was renumbered to UP 9881 on 11 December 1999 as part of the interim UP 9880-9939 group; assigned back to UP 5001, not renumbered prior to retirement of entire group.
  2. UP 5009 was retired on 20 June 2000, and reinstated on 7 July 2000.
  3. UP 5027 was wrecked on 25 October 1997 at West Junction (Houston), Texas; scrapped at wreck site.
  4. UP 5059 was wrecked on 18 November 1999 at Carnes, Iowa; moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, then to North Little Rock, Arkansas, on 13 February 2000.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 35 C&NW units went to UP at merger.
  2. Equipped with Automatic Train Control (ATC) for operation along former C&NW lines.
  3. Equipped while C&NW units with cab signals and Automatic Cab Signal equipment for operation along Union Pacific's lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River.
  4. Equipped with Pacesetter speed control, for slow-speed loading of unit coal trains.
  5. Upon becoming UP units, all former C&NW SD50s were also rebuilt to what UP calls SD50Ms, reducing their horsepower from 3600 to 3500 and improving their cooling system, including installation of eight-blade cooling fans.
  6. Assigned UP 9940-9974 in December 1999; assigned back to UP 5060-5094 in January 2000.
  7. All 35 units retired on 20 April 2001 upon expiration of lease; stored until returned to owner/lessor; all UP units (except C&NW 7005, 7009) were renumbered in October 2002 to the temporary WP reporting mark to clear the 5000 series for use by new SD70Ms (delivered beginning in August 2002).

General Notes:

  1. Total of 17 units went to UP at merger; seven units (D&RGW 5504, 5510, 5511, 5513, 5514, 5516, 5517) were repainted to SP in late 1994 and early 1995, with D&RGW sublettering on the cab, and were among a total of 26 D&RGW units repainted to SP.
  2. UP 5110 (ex D&RGW/SP 5516) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 14 November 1997.
