UP 6918 and 6924 were equipped with air sirens mounted on their cab roof, from March 1979 until their retirement in May 1985, including the period they were stored out of service between May 1980 through May 1985. The sirens had previously been installed on SDP35s 1400 and 1402, from May 1978 through March 1979.

General Notes:

  1. UP 6900-6946 were known as "Centennial" locomotives in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the May 10th 1869 driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah.
  2. Twenty-five units were stored at Council Bluffs, Iowa, in May 1980, with another 12 units stored at North Platte, Nebraska, and the remaining eight units being stored at Salt Lake City, Utah. The 37 units at Council Bluffs and North Platte were gathered at Las Vegas, Nevada, in early October 1980. The entire class (45 units - 37 units from Las Vegas and eight units from Salt Lake City) was moved to Yermo, California, during January and February 1982, where they remained for another two years.
  3. Twenty-five units were reconditioned at Salt Lake City, North Platte and Omaha by March 1984; to keep these 25 units in operating condition, 14 other units of the remaining 20 were stripped of usable parts and recommended for retirement April 1984, and actually retired by July 1984.
  4. All 45 units were again in storage by late 1984; some returned to service in late December 1984; all units out of service by early April 1985.
  5. UP 6900-6924 were built on EMD order number 7134.
  6. UP 6925-6946 were built on EMD order number 7198.

Notes:

  1. UP 6900 was donated to City of Omaha, Nebraska in September 1985, delivered in November 1986; moved in April 1988 east of Omaha Shops to Kenefick Park where it is on display with Big Boy 4023; the site was donated by Union Pacific to the City of Omaha for permanent exhibition; UP 4023 and UP 6900 were moved in May 2001 to make way for a new convention center, and were moved to temporary storage near the Durham Western Heritage Museum at Union Station in Omaha pending preparation of a new display site; moved to Mid America Car in Kansas City in January 2005 to be repainted; moved on April 15, 2005 to Lauritsen Gardens on a bluff overlooking Interstate 80; the display was completed and opened to the public on December 1, 2005.
  2. UP 6901 was donated to City of Pocatello, Idaho in October 1985, delivered on 26 November 1985, moved to Ross Park for display in March 1986.
  3. UP 6902, 6908, 6909, 6914, 6923, 6924, 6926, 6927, 6933, 6934, 6940, 6941, 6942, 6943, 6945 (15 units) were traded to EMD in August 1986; scrapped.
  4. UP 6903 was wrecked on April 6, 1974 near Cajon, California; moved to the Salt Lake City Shops and retired; sold for scrap to The Purdy Company at Lakepoint, Utah in June 1974.
  5. UP 6904, 6905 and 6937 were sold to Precision National Corporation, Mount Vernon, Illinois on March 2, 1988; UP 6904 and 6937 were still at Precision on June 5, 1994.
  6. UP 6906, 6910, 6918, 6920, 6929, 6931, 6932, 6935 (8 units) were traded to EMD in May 1986; scrapped by St. Louis Auto Shredding. (Dakota Southern Railway purchased one of the trucks from UP 6906 from St. Louis Auto Shredding, for its own DDA40X, ex UP 6925).
  7. UP 6907 was moved from storage at Yermo in February 1984 to Salt Lake City to be stripped of usable parts; retired in June 1984 while stored unserviceable at Salt Lake City; sold for scrap to General Metals, Tacoma, Washington, in September 1984; seen en route from Salt Lake City to Tacoma on September 20, 1984.
  8. UP 6909 was out of service in March 1985 when some of its carbody doors were used at Salt Lake City to repair wreck-damaged UP 3630, which had been in a side-swipe accident the damaged all of its carbody doors along its left side. The large Centennial lettering was visible on UP 3630 before it was painted.
  9. UP 6911 was donated to Technological Museum of the Federal Electricity Commission (Mutec) in Mexico City, in March 1985.
  10. UP 6912 was loaned for parts to the Feather River Rail Society, Portola, California; FRRS removed both engines, both generators, both electrical cabinets, both air compressors, all traction motors, and all brake components, leaving the cab and nose assembly and remaining carbody intact; UP 6912 was returned to UP at Salt Lake City, Utah, on 14 February 1987; sold for scrap to Durbano, Ogden, Utah, 2 April 1987; seen at Durbano in July 1987 completely stripped down to the frame, looking like a long flat car with a large fuel tank and four-axle trucks.
  11. Craig Lacey wrote on August 18, 2018, as a comment during a discussion about Peacekeepr Rail Garrison: "Note that the handbrake system was left intact. A contractor competing for the Peacekeeper Rail Garrison feasibility-study contract reportedly had Durbano Metals prepare this 8-axle "low-cost, ready-made heavy-duty flatcar" as a test bed for the project. Another contractor won the contract instead, and this remnant of the 6912 went away."

  1. UP's designation for these locomotives is C60AC; GE's designation is AC6000CW.
  2. UP 7001-7005 had original build dates of December 1995, as reflected on their builder's plates; during the formal one-year test period, these units operated on UP and were returned to GE for modifications prior to delivery to UP in November 1996.

UP units 7000 and 7003 made their intermodal run from Chicago to Salt Lake City and underwent high-speed testing on trains between Salt Lake City and Green River. These units, plus four more 6,000-h.p. ACs -- UP 7001, UP 7002, UP 7004 and UP 7005 -- will soon be placed into service between North Platte and Green River in 12,000-h.p. pairs." (Update Line, Union Pacific Communications Department, November 26, 1996)
  4. Renumbered from 7000 series to 7500 series at GE in Erie, Pa., upon installation of upgraded engines.
