General Notes:

  1. UP 8500-8507 operated as pre-production units for EMD in 1996 to 1998.
  2. UP 8508-8514 were assembled by Super Steel Schenectady, Schenectady, New York.
  3. UP 8506 and 8508 were the first two units in this group to enter revenue service on UP; delivered to UP in June 1998 and assigned to soda ash service between Green River, Wyoming, and Chicago.
  4. UP 8501-8513 and 8515-8521 were removed from service in late December 1998 and returned to EMD for design improvements; returned to service in July through December 1999; removed from service during early 2000 for additional design improvements; returned to service beginning in early July 2000.
  5. UP 8501-8521 renumbered to UP 8911-8931 series; UP 8514 was the first, completed as UP 8924 on 3 May 2005.
  6. All 22 units were equipped with Locotrol III for distributed power service, also known as DPU.
  7. The UP model designation for these locomotives is SD90AC; EMD uses SD90MAC-H.

Notes:

  1. UP 8500 was built as UP 8160 in August 1996, held at EMD as a test bed for SD90MAC-H (SD90AC) concept and design; renumbered to UP 8500 in August 1998; assigned as UP 8200 to avoid conflict with a newly built 4300 horsepower SD9043AC (the second UP 8160 was delivered to UP on 1 July 1997), but renumbered directly from UP 8160 to UP 8500; first delivered to UP on 17 October 1998; returned to EMD for design improvements in late 1998; held by EMD for engineering tests until delivered to UP on 27 December 2000; lease expired and returned to EMD on 1 December 2005 (along with UP 8522-8561); in national lease service as EMLX 8500.
  2. UP 8501 was built as UP 8201 in October 1996 and delivered for functional testing to AAR's test track near Pueblo, Colorado; moved to VMV for upgrade during July 1998. Released from VMV on 10 October 1998.
  3. UP 8504 operated from March 1997 through January 1998 as EMDX 8204, then as EMDX 8504 until September 1998, painted in a special paint scheme to commemorate EMD's 75th anniversary; moved to VMV for upgrade during May 1998; released from VMV in full UP yellow and gray on 26 September 1998.
  4. UP 8514 was held by EMD for engineering tests until delivered to UP on 6 July 2000.

General Notes:

  1. UP 8522-8561 (40 units) are fitted with an improved version of the North American Safety Cab, which includes a taller nose entry door (the new cab was first used on EMD demonstrators 90 and 91).
  2. UP 8522-8538 (17 units) were assembled and painted at GM's plant in London, Ontario.
  3. UP 8539-8561 (23 units) were assembled by Super Steel Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, and painted by Alstom at Hornell, N.Y.
  4. Upon completion in June through October 1999, all 40 units were moved to VMV Enterprises, Paducah, Kentucky, pending design improvements; delivered to UP beginning in February 2000.
  5. The UP model designation for these locomotives is SD90AC; EMD uses SD90MAC II.
  6. The lease on all 40 units expired and all were returned to EMD during December 2005 to February 2006; in national lease service as EMLX 8522-8561.

General Notes:

  1. Original total of 73 D&RGW units; 69 units went to UP at merger; SP retired four units (D&RGW 5348, 5370, 5402, and 5408) prior to the merger.
  2. Of the 69 units to UP at merger, 15 units (D&RGW 5350, 5351, 5352, 5362, 5366, 5368, 5378, 5380, 5387, 5388, 5393, 5394, 5397, 5399, and 5412) had been repainted to SP.
  3. UP 8595 (ex UP 4025, ex D&RGW 5403) was the first unit in this group to be renumbered, completed on 2 December 1999; initially repainted to UP 4025, but changed to UP 8595 on the same day before release from shop.
  4. UP 8634 (ex UP 4064), as SP 5380, was wrecked (grade crossing accident) on 9 June 1999 near Hope, Minnesota; cab torn from frame; repaired by Mid America Car, Kansas City, Missouri; renumbered to UP 4064 at time of repairs.
  5. Assigned UP 4000-4068 in September 1997, 22 units renumbered after being refurbished by UP in March 1997 through May 2000; all 69 units assigned UP 8570-8638 in December 1999, to clear the 4000 series for use by new SD70Ms (22 refurbished units assigned numbers in UP 2866-2949 group in December 1999, along with 62 refurbished former SP and SSW SD40T-2s; UP calls these refurbished units SD40-2TRs.)
  6. In January 2007, a total of 20 units remained in this 8570-8638 number series. With the planned arrival of additional new SD70ACe units to be numbered as UP 8521-8620, these 20 SD40T-2 units needed to be renumbered, either to their planned 2866-2949 series (a total of eight units), or to the new UP 9863-9873 (a total of 12 units). The first two units to be renumbered were UP 8571 and 8599, to UP 9863 and 9872 respectively, both in January 2007.

D&RGW 5371 (assigned UP 8627) was the last remaining former D&RGW unit still in full D&RGW black and gold paint; retired by UP on December 5, 2008; stored at Cheyenne, Wyoming, as part of UP's Heritage Fleet pending possible preservation; donated to Ogden Union Station, Ogden, Utah; arrived at Ogden on August 17, 2009.
