- The UP model designation for these locomotives is SD90AC; EMD uses SD90MAC-H.
- All 21 units equipped with Locotrol III for distributed power service, also known as DPU.
- Renumbered from UP 8501-8521, beginning with UP 8514/8924 on 3 May 2005.
- Formal ownership passed to UP at sometime between 2006 and the units' June 2008 retirement.
- Following retirement, all 21 units stored at Denver, Colorado, until early August 2008; moved in groups of two or three units to Metro East Industries (MEI) in East St. Louis, Illinois, for removal of usable parts and scrapping of remaining hulks.

Notes:
- UP 8501 was built as UP 8201 in October 1996 and delivered for functional testing to AAR's test track near Pueblo, Colorado; moved to VMV for upgrade during July 1998; released from VMV on 10 October 1998; renumbered to UP 8911.
- UP 8504 operated from March 1997 through January 1998 as EMDX 8204, then as EMDX 8504 until September 1998, painted in a special paint scheme to commemorate EMD's 75th anniversary; moved to VMV for upgrade during May 1998; released from VMV in full UP yellow and gray on 26 September 1998; renumbered to UP 8914.
- UP 8924, as UP 8514, was held by EMD for engineering tests until delivered to UP on 6 July 2000.

- UP 8932, as UP B4124, was renumbered back to UP 4124 on 26 June 1997; returned to trailing-unit-only status as UP B4124 on 31 August 1999.
- UP 8934 was rebuilt to SD38-2 by UP for yard switch service and renumbered to UPY 862 on 29 May 2003.
- UP 8943, as UP 4205, operated in trailing-unit-only status as UP B4205 from 1 December 1992 to 7 October 1997.
- UP 8943 was the first unit in this group to be renumbered, completed on 10 May 2000.
- UP 8946 was retired and renumbered to UP 7903 (Peak Power) on 5 December 2003.
- UP 8953 was retired and renumbered to UP 7908 (Peak Power) on 23 December 2003.
- UP 8959 was rebuilt to SD38-2 by UP for yard switch service and renumbered to UPY 861 on 13 December 2002.
- UP B4273 was retired on 18 April 2000; still on property and renumbered to UP 8974 on 28 November 2000.
- UP 8991 was rebuilt to SD38-2 by UP for yard switch service and renumbered to UPY 865 on 28 December 2004.

General Notes:
- UP 9000 first operated as a test unit at the EMD plant in October 1977; operated as EMD demonstrator (GMCX 9000) on D&RGW in February and March 1978, en route to Leadville, Colorado, on BN subsidiary Colorado & Southern for high altitude testing; photographed with EMD test cars on AT&SF at Barstow, California, on May 7, 1978; UP 9000 was delivered to UP on 16 July 1978, after the other five units. UP records showed a build date for UP 9000 as 15 July 1978.
- UP 9002 had an initial air-equipment date of February 28, 1978.
- Equipped with special high adhension HT-B trucks.
- Initial per unit cost for UP 9000-9005, according to Equipment Trust No. 1 of 1978, dated September 1, 1977, was $502,400, with a total cost of $3,014,400 for all six units. As comparison, the 29 SD40-2s purchased under the same trust, UP 3410-3438, cost $609,425 each.
- All six units had a bolster centerline of 34 feet, 10-3/4 inches; the trucks had a wheelbase of 117-1/2 inches; the noses were EMD's 88 inches long version.
- All six units were rebuilt by UP using some GP50 components in October and November 1981; the original 42-inch wheels were replaced with standard 40-inch wheels by late 1984.
- Built as UP 9000-9005, renumbered to UP 90-95 in May and June 1985; renumbered to UP 954-959 in January 1989 through January 1990, UP 956 retired in November 1997; assigned UP 5500-5505 in 1997, two units renumbered in June and November 1997; assigned UP 9994-9998 in December 1999, none renumbered prior to retirement of five remaining units in May and June 2001.
