General Notes:

  1. Total of 60 units; purchased by MP in late 1984, after the December 1982 merger with UP; delivered new as MP units with yellow and gray paint and Missouri Pacific lettering as the first new units of the merged UP and MP.
  2. All 60 former MP SD50s were relettered from Missouri Pacific to Union Pacific from December 1988 to September 1990; the first, UP 5029, was completed on 12 December 1988; the last was 5052, completed on 17 September 1990.
  3. Beginning in mid-1994, former MP SD50s were rebuilt to what UP calls SD50Ms, reducing their horsepower from 3600 to 3500 and improving their cooling system, including installation of eight-blade cooling fans; the first unit to be converted was 5016, completed on 6 June 1994.
  4. Equipped with Automatic Cab Signal equipment for leading-unit operation along Union Pacific's lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River.
  5. UP 5001 was renumbered to UP 9881 on 11 December 1999 as part of the interim UP 9880-9939 group.
  6. Assigned UP 9880-9939 in December 1999; assigned back to UP 5000-5059 in January 2000 (UP 5001 renumbered to UP 9881); most units retired in June 2000 to December 2001, remaining 10 units assigned UP 9835-9844 in May 2002 to clear the 5000 series for use by new SD70Ms.

Notes:

  1. UP 9839, retired on July 16, 2007, was first reported as being retired on November 30, 2002, which was in error.
  2. UP 9842 was retired the first time on November 30, 2002; returned to service on April 8, 2004; retired for a second time on August 16, 2004.

General Notes:

  1. Total of 17 units went to UP at merger; seven units (D&RGW 5504, 5510, 5511, 5513, 5514, 5516, 5517) were repainted to SP in late 1994 and early 1995, with D&RGW sublettering on the cab, and were among a total of 26 D&RGW units repainted to SP.
  2. UP 5110 (ex D&RGW/SP 5516) was the first of this group to be repainted to Union Pacific, completed on 14 November 1997; the last was UP 9851 (ex D&RGW 5507), completed on 30 August 2005.
  3. Assigned UP 9975-9991 in December 1999; assigned back to UP 5095-5111 in January 2000; assigned UP 9845-9861 in April 2002 to avoid conflict with additional new SD70Ms in the 5000 series numbers.
  4. All 17 units retired on 15 June 2007 upon expiration of lease; returned to owner.

General Notes:

  1. UP 9881 was renumbered from UP 5001 (ex MP 5001) on 11 December 1999, just one day after the renumber plan was adopted on 10 December 1999. During February 2000, the renumbering plan was changed to retain all of the former C&NW, D&RGW, and MP SD50s in their original 5000-5111 number group (all 5000 series SD50 were later either renumbered to the 9835 series, or retired, to clear the 5000 series for use by new SD70M units). UP 9881 planned to return to UP 5001; retired prior to be renumbered.

Notes:

  1. UP 9882 (as UP 4159) was retired on 31 May 1999, prior to the December 1999 renumber plan, but was still on property and was renumbered to UP 9882 on 5 December 2000 to clear the UP 4159 number for use by new SD70M 4159.

UP 9909 was renumbered from WP 4161 (the WP series are temporary numbers used for retired locomotives); UP 4161 was retired on 31 October 2000, but was still on property and was renumbered to WP 4161 on 22 November 2000 to clear the UP 4161 number for use by a new SD70M; renumbered to UP 9909 on 17 January 2001 while retired and stored at Los Angeles.
  5. UP 9914, as UP 4208, was retired on 18 April 2000; renumbered to UP 9914 while in retired status.
  6. UP 9923 was rebuilt to SD38-2 by UP for yard switch service and renumbered to UPY 859 on 26 April 2003.
  7. UP 9927 (also as UP 4238) was one of three units (UP 3626 and 3798 were the other two units) that carried the Operation Redblock substance abuse prevention slogan.
  8. UP 9929 was rebuilt to SD38-2 by UP for yard switch service and renumbered to UPY 866 on 28 April 2005.
  9. UP 9934 (ex UP 4270) was the first unit in this group to be renumbered, completed on 25 February 2000; retired on 17 March 2000.
  10. UP 9950 donated to Western America Railroad Museum at Barstow, California (date?).

  1. Original total of 38 C&NW units, numbered C&NW 5500-5537; 33 units went to UP at merger; C&NW retired five units (C&NW 5514, 5519, 5523, 5530 and 5536) prior to the merger.
