Photos and text accounts of train wreck on M-K-T near Elgin, Texas.)
- The following comes from Robert Donnell, one of the crew members on Train 104:
- "Thirty-three cars of ballast rolled out of siding at Elgin in non-block territory. Train 104 had MKT 181 in the lead, with MKT 89C, an Alco FA-1 re-engined with EMD prime mover, and MKT 177, another GP40. Train 104 had 90 cars, mostly empties. After rounding 'S' curve at 37 MPH, train 104 collided with the ballast cars at 22 MPH, killing engineer J. B. Patterson and his 17 year old son Darryl, who was riding with his dad as his graduation present per his request. They lived across the street from me and I was the rear brakeman on the train."
