General Notes:

  1. Rebuilt from MP 2500 class GP35s by replacing the 2,500 horsepower EMD 16 cylinder 567D3A turbocharged engine with a 2,000 horsepower EMD 645 non-turbocharged engine.
  2. The MP GP35Ms were last used in local service near North Little Rock, Arkansas, until mid 1985.
  3. MP 2603 and 2606 received yellow and gray paint, with MP lettering.
  4. Fifteen units were stored at North Little Rock from mid 1985, and retired on 18 August 1986. All 15 units were sold to Wilson Railway Corp., Des Moines, Iowa, on 5 January 1987, moved in a single train movement to Council Bluffs, Iowa, on 13 February 1987, and delivered to Wilson during June 1987; Wilson sold 11 units to Wisconsin Central in October 1987, who used the units as its first road power as it began operations on 11 October 1987, on 2,002 miles of former Soo Line tracks; the remaining four units were leased to the Kiamichi Railroad in Oklahoma, then sold to Helm Financial upon Wilson's bankruptcy.

General Notes, before merger:

  1. MP 960-983 series renumbered to MP 1-29 series in early 1973, including T&P 970-973, which became T&P 11-14.
  2. MP 1-29 series renumbered to MP 3300-3328 series in May 1978, including T&P 11-14, which had become MP 11-14 with the October 1976 merger of T&P into MP.
  3. MP 3300-3328 and T&P 3329-3334 series renumbered to MP 2965-2999 series in February 1979, to avoid conflict with new SD40-2s.
  4. MP 2965-2970 15-year lease expired on 30 April 1983, all six units purchased by MP.
  5. MP 2976 (as MP 3311) was wrecked in 1975, cab destroyed; new EMD design cab applied by Pike Avenue Shops in November 1976; cab built using EMD plans; six inches longer and two inches higher, to match GE hood height.
  6. MP 2984 (as MP 3319) was wrecked in June 1976, cab destroyed; rebuilt in late 1976 without cab and short hood; new GE short hood and applied during early 1977.

General Notes, after merger:

  1. MP 2971-2974 lease expired on 30 May 1984, returned to owner/lessor.
  2. MP 2965, 2967, 2968, and 2970 were the only U30Cs to be painted yellow and gray. The four U30Cs were completed during October 1984 and traded to GE on new C36-7s only eight months later.
  3. The remaining 31 MP U30Cs (except MP 2971-2974) were removed from service in January 1985 and stored at Fort Worth pending retirement and disposition.
  4. MP 2984-2988 lease expired on 30 June 1987, retired by UP on 3 July 1987; UP purchased all five units on 24 September 1987 and reinstated them to roster; units remained in storage until traded to GE in 1988, or sold for scrap in 1989.
  5. Assigned UP 2965-2999 in December 1984, none renumbered prior to retirement by in 1984 to 1989.

  1. MP 2965-2970 and 2975-2978 (10 units) were traded to GE, 28 May 1985; MP 2970 was rebuilt by GE-Cleveland with Caterpillar engine and remote control in early 1987; sold to Enterprise Coal Co., Robinson Creek, Kentucky.
  2. MP 2971 (disposition unknown)
  3. MP 2972 was scrapped at NLR during early 1985.
  4. MP 2973 and 2974 were retired by UP in May 1984; sold to (?); used in the construction of AT&SF's Lee Ranch Subdivision, near Grants, N.M.; also used in construction of Western Fuels Association's Escalante Western Railway (also known as the Star Lake line) in northwestern New Mexico; scrapped by American Iron & Metal, Pueblo, Colorado, in June 1985.
  5. MP 2979-2983 and 2994-2999 (11 units) were traded to GE, 26 June 1987; scrapped by Pielet Brothers Scrap Iron & Metal, McCook, Illinois, during July 1987.
  6. MP 2984 was traded to GE in April 1988.

  8. MP 2986 was wrecked; sold for scrap to Southwest Railroad Car Parts, 9 May 1989; scrapped.
