OSL 100 KP 61 UPRy 402 ICRy 1 OSL&UN 402 Baldwin 2192 Jul 1870

Description:

  • Drive Wheel Diameter: 61 inches (later 69 inches)
  • Cylinders: 16x24 inches (later 18x26 inches)

General Notes:

  1. OSL 100 is shown in the January 1, 1900 listing of OSL equipment, with 16x24-inch cylinders and a new date of August 1870
  2. Based on the UP Boston account books, Pitchard says OSL 100 was built as KP 61 in 1870; to UPRy 402 in 1885; to Idaho Central Railway in 1887; to OSL&UN 402 in 1889; to OSL 100 in 1897; Pitchard cites "a U. P. Boston General Office general journal entry in August of 1887, which notes that U.P. engine No. 402 (and some other rolling stock) was sold in that month to the new Idaho Central Railway."
  3. Based on the UP 1894 inventory record, McCulloh does not show an OSL 100, and that UPRy 402 was rebuilt to UPRy 827 in 1887, then to UP 941 in 1915.
  4. (The question becomes: which "official" record is more believable, the Boston account book record, or the UP 1894 inventory record. There were at least four locomotives in the UPRy 400 series, all vacated in 1887, that could have been sold to Idaho Central and/or rebuilt to UPRy 827.)

  1. The OSL 500-525 series were a group of ex OSL&UN 900- and 1000-class locomotives rebuilt before 1894 with 57 inch drivers; due to their similarity, all were renumbered to the 500 series when OSL took possession of OSL&UN in 1897.
  2. The "Engine New" dates shown in the 1900 OSL inventory may be the most recent rebuild of a particular locomotive, with OSL 523, 524 and 525 being the obvious cases
